Curl of a vector field

The curl of a vector field is defined by

Thus, by definition, the curl of is a vector having the components

Again this definition is at this stage purely a mathematical symbolicism. In Art 1.06 the curl of the velocity field is discussed, and in this case a definite physical significance is attached to the quantity.
