Deformation

Deformation is always accompanied by a change in distance between particles. Observe that for normal deformation the spacing between particles located on opposite faces of an elemental parallelogram changes, while for shear deformation the spacing between particles located at opposite corners of the parallelogram changes (see Figs. 1.05-2 and 1.05-3).
