Software we run on a network of machines to make a bunch of machines perform
(usually) transparently as one.
Software we run on the cluster to obtain important scientific information, and
that it designed to run efficiently on clusters.
Software to monitor hardware status and hardware/software performance.
"NetPIPE is a protocol independent performance tool that visually represents the network performance under a variety of conditions. It performs simple ping-pong tests, bouncing messages of increasing size between two processes, whether across a network or within an SMP system. Message sizes are chosen at regular intervals, and with slight perturbations, to provide a complete test of the communication system. Each data point involves many ping-pong tests to provide an accurate timing. Latencies are calculated by dividing the round trip time in half for small messages ( less than 64 Bytes )."
"The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks. In many cases, these utilities will provide advanced warning of disk degradation and failure."
High Performance Network Software
A search to find possibly ways to transcend the TCP/IP protocols, which
were designed for robust rather than maximum throughput.
Stuff we actually have here sitting on the shelves.
Stuff we don't have, either because we thought we needed it but don't, or
because we just don't have it yet.
