The list of things that need to be done (or that I'd kind of
like to do) includes such items as:
- including a graphic showing a T-S diagram for all
the water masses;
- including photographs with all of the biographical entries;
- including drawings or photographs of the various
sampling and measuring devices;
- an appendix listing the significant journals in which
oceanographic research is published (or has been published) with
appropriate details (addresses, statement of purpose, etc.);
- an appendix listing significant books in the field along
with appropriate details (publishing info, a brief editorial
description, etc.);
- deciding whether to attempt to meld the regional geographical
maps within the text or to put them in a separate section or
appendix;
- an appendix listing the institutions at which oceanographic
degrees are conferred and/or research is performed along with
appropriate details (although some of these will be included in
the main part as historical entries);
- including entries of significant research vessels along
with pictures of them (although I'm not quite sure how or where
to draw the line here);
- making a CD-ROM (that will either accompany the text or
be available as a supplement) that will contain a hypertext version
of the glossary as well as bonus items such as color versions of
the maps, the shell scripts used to produce the maps, the bathymetric
data files used to produce the maps, etc.;
- including more entries describing reasonably stable and
useful software of specific interest to oceanographers;
- including some larger maps as either fold-outs or in a
separate pouch or packet, at least for a short series of
global maps showing bathymetry (Heezen and Tharp?), locations
of currents, locations of institutions, details of historical
voyages or expeditions, etc.;
- an interactive piece of software (also on the CD-ROM)
that allows the reader to create or tweak his own versions of
the regional maps (e.g. with or without geographics, with a
different set of bathymetric contours, etc.) that could be
based on the GMT software package.
