Fu Chuan-Fu is a Chinese artist born in 1910 who is particularly well known for his landscape paintings in which he has developed his own unique method of rendering rocks and mountains. He is also well known for his calligraphy work. Western influence can be seen in this picture, although his rendering of the rocks and the details of the water and waves show more traditional Chinese influences. Few Chinese artists have specialized in seascapes or in the depiction of ocean waves, which makes this picture unusual as well as interesting. The work of Chuan-Fu and other contemporary Chinese artists can be found in Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting from the Republic of China - Part II by Shen Fu and Stephen Allee. This is part of the documentation of a traveling exhibit from the National Museum of History of the Republic of China in 1990. It was published by the International Council on Education for Teaching in Arlington, Virginia.
