The Online Companion to
The Essential Jazz Records

A Two-Volume Set of 500 Reviews of Jazz Albums by Max Harrison, Charles Fox and Eric Thacker

I found the first volume of this set a few months ago in a local used book store, and finally got around to more than a surface perusal a couple of weeks ago. Boy howdy was I ever impressed, so I immediately ordered the second volume. I started making a list of all 500 albums discussed in the books so I could carry it with me when ferreting out such things in the growing racks of available used CDs. It's grown a bit beyond just being a list into what I hope is a useful complement to the books which, by the way, are very highly recommended reading. Reading the reviews/descriptions/histories of Harrison, Fox and Thacker have made me actually want to learn some music theory, something I was certain had been irretrievably burned out of me at a very young age.

You can get a good idea of what I want this to become by having a look-see at what's already here. One (outrageous) long-term plan is to make available MP3/Ogg/whatever versions of as many of the songs as is possible given the various legal and other pragmatic constraints.

If you're interested in getting beyond that old copy of "Birth of the Cool" or are skeptical that Burns and Marsalis supplied the final word on such matters, these books are a fine place to start further explorations.

Volume I: Ragtime to Swing

First published 1984 by Mansell Publishing Limited
Paperback edition reissued 2000 by Mansell Publishing, a Cassell Imprint
ISBN 0-7201-1708-9

1. Origins

Prelude: the Afro-American Background

This is a restricted selection from the vast range of musics, related yet often very different, which both preceded jazz and ran parallel to it.

1. Savannah Syncopators, CBS (E) 52799

2. Negro Church Music, Atlantic Special (E) 590.029, Atlantic (A) 1351

3. Sounds of the South, Atlantic (E) 590.092, Atlantic (A) 1346

4. Great Jug Bands, Historical (A) HLP36

Ragtime

Ragtime was the most identifiable precursor of jazz. Although thought of by contemporaries as mainly a vocal form, subsequent developments were influenced by the best of piano ragtime.

5. Heliotrope Bouquet: Piano Rags 1900-1970, Nonesuch (A) H71257

6. Scott Joplin: Ragtime Pioneer, Riverside (Eu) RLP8815

9. Piano Rags by Joseph Lamb, Genesis (A) GS1045

10. New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra, Arhoolie (A) 1058

Proto-jazz and the Earliest Recordings in New York

These are some of the first recordings of jazz (or jass) as it grew out of ragtime. They show that this new music was established far from New Orleans much earlier than is usually supposed.

New Orleans

Recordings such as 11-17 notwithstanding, New Orleans was the home of the earliest known mature jazz style; there was a continuing local style there up until almost the present.

Documentary Recordings

These offer detailed later indications of several kinds of the nature of the earliest jazz, and its background, before any records were made.

18. New Orleans Joys: The Young Tuxedo Brass Band, Atlantic (E) 590.023, Atlantic (A) 1297

19. Bunk Johnson: Early Bunk 1943-1943, Dan (J) VC4020

21. Jelly Roll Morton: The Library of Congress Recordings, Classic Jazz Masters (Sd) CJM2-9, Riverside (A) 9001-12

The Earliest Recordings in New Orleans

Activity in New Orleans during the 1920s was poorly documented (and the situation was to be even worse in the 1930s). These LPs, however, give as clear an idea as can now be obtained of the sorts of jazz heard there in that decade.

22. A. J. Piron/Louis Dumaine/Jones-Collins: New Orleans, Collectors' Classics (D) CC45
