Crafts Lit from Google Books
Topic Intro
This page collects the books on crafts scattered about on the virtual shelves at Google Books, and attempts at least a rudimentary order/classification thing to make specific topics easier to locate. I'll not attempt to wrestle with the art/craft issue herein, and simply say that most of what you'll find here is more crafty than arty. That the term "industrial arts" was used equivalently for "crafts" pre-1900 doesn't exactly lessen any confusion that might arise, but all-in-all it's a minor semantic issue that shouldn't get in the way of having a good time. Enjoy.
Boilerplate Intro
Herein is my personal catalog of reference and other books of particular interest to me that have been scanned and made available in PDF format via Google Books. They've proved a really marvelous resource, and one which is getting steadily better, larger and more useful. While it's handy and convenient to let them store the things so they'll be at your fingertips whenever you're on the web, a cautionary type might want to download copies of at least the ones of most interest. Google is a corporation, with more rights - thanks to Big Tony and the Supremes - and less responsibilities than these anachronisms we call individuals, and they can do whatever they bloody well want to at any time they want to do it.
This is all here because either I can't figure out how to use the tools Google Books provides to do this, or their tools are insufficient and overly fussy. I'm betting the latter.
Feel free to borrow any or all of this, with the understanding that an attribution will keep the karma dogs off your ass.
| On a technical note, I've attempted to extract informative or at least entertaining bits from the prefaces or other parts of some of the books. These will appear in this differently colored format which, thankfully, at least isn't blinking. These extracts may contain extraneous artifacts from Google's OCR rendering of the PDF scans into text that I've been too lazy to fix. |
|---|
On another technical note, I'll occasionally add reviews, comments, etc. from sources external to the books, which will added in a wee font like this.
On a really annoying technical note, some entries will be shown in blue. These are so indicated because they exist and should - by any reading of copyright law not involving Sonny Bono and DisneyCorp - be available. Their non-availability makes me blue in the Buddy Guy way.
If you feel you must get in touch with me so you can send me mint copies of any or all of the books listed below, then send some electrons to baum@stommel.tamu.edu.
Immediately following is an intro to the specific topic covered on this page. The ur-fount page from which all topic pages flow is here.

I've thus far deliberately (mostly) avoided things electrical, as that will become a separate section or page
somewhere else.

If you bang on it and it makes a loud, clangy noise, then it's probably covered in this section.
We've got blacksmithing, forging, metallurgy, welding and everything else metallic. The cool factor
for being able to work with metal is almost beyond measure.

In terms of cool factor stonework is on just about the same level as metalwork, and even
more basic and elemental. There's just something about big rocks, whether they're natural
or man-made. This will cover stonework, brickwork, masonry, concrete and the like. Eventually, I might
even cover that other kind of less physically rocky masonry on another page.

Watches, Clocks, Horology, Sundials, Calendars, Etc.
Although I've got my problems with our present societal obsession with dicing time periods into
ever smaller and more nerve-wracking bits - a sundial is just about right for me in that regard - the
topic is not without intrinsic fascination. Here you'll find treatises on the calendar and how it
came to be what is is, the history of timekeeping and its current (circa 1920) state of the art, how to
create sundials, and even a bit about alternate calendars used by ancient civilizations. There'll be
none of that 2012 nonsense around here, though.

Weaving, Dying, Textiles, Etc.
Here you'll find books about the various fibres we use to clothe and decorate ourselves and our
surroundings. There are tomes on the history of various fibres, the various manual and mechanical
ways that have been devised to turn them into threads and then weave them together, and the dyes used to color them.
The Jacquard loom described in some of these books played not a small part in the early history of
computational machines.
