Frank Zappa
Frank Zappa - Actuel Festival, Amougies, Belgium, Oct. 23, 1969
Notes:
Frank Zappa Amougies (Belgium), Actuel Festival 24 to 27 October 1969 source: audience recording This is an amazing find that I'm sure will delight fans of Fr ank Zappa and the bands concerned alike. A little background : the Actuel festival was organized by the publication of the same name (who, under different editorship, went on to become a prime mover of the French counterculture in the early to mid-7 0s) in collaboration with the fledgling BYG label. It was originally going to take place in or near Paris, but French authorities forbid it and the marquee was eventu ally set up a few miles outside the French border, on Belgian soil. It took place o ver 5 nights, entertaining an audience of 15-20,000 to a unique mixture of progress ive pop, free jazz and contemporary music. Frank Zappa was present at the festiv al (well, the first four days, it seems) in a twofold capacity. First, as Captain B eefheart's road manager; secondly, as M.C., assisting Pierre Lattes, a famous radio /TV presenter at the time (and the pop music editor for Actuel magazine). The latte r task proved problematic given FZ's very limited mastery of French, the prevailing language among the audience, who themselves didn't seem to understand much English . Instead, FZ relinquished his M.C. job for one of occasional guest guitarist. As far as I know, with the exception of FZ's performance with Captain Beefheart, thi s collects all of his jams with participating bands. A couple of films, directed by Jerome Laperrousaz and Jean-Noel Roy, came out in 1970 but were instantly banned b ecause of objections from various bands (most notably Pink Floyd) whose permission hadn't been properly secured. Zappa's performance with Beefheart is included in one of them, and since the audio of the film (unlike the film itself) is in circulatio n, possibly in better sound than I could provide, I decided not to include it. The whereabouts of the master tapes for the festival, if any exist, are unknown. Wha t recordings are circulating are either the soundtrack of the film, or taken from r adio broadcasts (on Luxemburg's RTL and Belgium's RTBF). The source used here is an audience recording made by a young French member of the audience using a now antiq uated amateur tape recorder. The original tapes have been newly transferred, but ev en so, the sound quality is rather poor. Still, it seems to be the only source avai lable at this time, so that will have to do for now. Most legendary, of course, is Frank Zappa's jam with Pink Floyd on a very extended "Interstellar Overdrive". A pparently, despite the wealth of Pink Floyd bootlegs in circulation, no one seems t o have their Amougies set, so this will probably delight a lot of people. Browing v arious PF-related websites, there even seems to be a debate on whether the jam ever took place. Well, here is the final proof that it did. Now, the tracklist: 1. Aynsley Dunbar's Retaliation: unknown title (7:08) [October 24] Victor Brox (vo cals, harmonica); John Moorshead (guitar); Alex (Erroneous) Dmochowski (bass); Ayns ley Dunbar (drums) 2. Pink Floyd: Interstellar Overdrive (20:25) [October 25] David Gilmour (guitar); Richard Wright (organ); Roger Waters (bass); Nick Mason (dr ums) 3. Caravan: If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You (7:55) [October 26] Pye Hastings (guitar & vocals); David Sinclair (keyboards); Richard S inclair (bass & vocals); Richard Coughlan (drums) 4. Blossom Toes: unknown title (26:10) [October 26] Brian Godding (guitar, vocals & keyboards); Jim Cregan (gui tar & vocals); Brian Belshaw (bass & vocals); Kevin Westlake (drums) 5. Sam Apple Pie: unknown title (6:04) [October 27] Sam Sampson (vocals & harmonica); Danny Barnes (lead guitar); Andy Johnson (slide guitar); Bob Renny (bass & vocals); Lee B axter Hayes Jr (drums) (Note: I understand FZ jammed with some of the free jazz players. Sadly the taper was into rock, not jazz, and didn't bother recording any o f the jazz acts.) I intend to seed some of the individual performances in the ne ar future, so watch out. I must thank the taper, JJB, for his permission to seed th ese rare treasures, making them available freely to all via DaD in affinity with it s non-profit philosophy.

I have also done the artwork for this version of this show. Pictures taken the nig
ht of the show by D. Knarr. I really have never liked the practice of giving title
s to live shows but I understand one of the reasons people do it is to distinguish
between different versions of the same show. I felt like I needed to give this one
a title due to the other inferior versions that exist. Please keep the artwork an
d text file, unaltered, together with the SHN's.

The tapers of sources 2 & 3, Exioq and MaxpOwer, each gave me their unedited, full length reco rdings for use in this project. Special thanks must go to each of them for their generosity and effort .By allowing me to use their recordings the number of files I needed to juggle during t his project was reduced from over 80 to around 30, saving me a great deal of time. Thank You !! On this evening the crowd was very enthusiastic so I took every chance I could to remove talkin g, yelling and the like from this new recording. What I left in is minimal, enough to let us re member this is still recorded from the audience but not a distraction from the music. If you kn ow these 3 recordings well you will notice many instances of crowd noise have simply disappeare d. In my opinion this new recording is rich in sound. The 3 sources mixed together very well, the only issue I dealt with was a slight reduction in bass on each source for the final mix.The so urces captured bass very well, when combined there was too much for my ears and a spike in that area of the sound spectrum when I did a test mix.I included 2 screenshots of the project to gi ve everyone an idea of what that looks like, one of them shows a section of music just 8/100 th s of a second in duration and aligned perfectly. During the first set Dweezil introduces an 11 year old boy, Eric, sitting in the 2nd row. On of heels of my WR Live in Philly 1974 that I ul last week here is another great and rare (traded one time) show for everyone. This show was recorded by me during the tour Zawinul did to promote his recording "Dialects". This is an excellent sounding show and a rare chance to hear Z in a wonderful solo performance. The interaction between Z and the audience is fun also with the best exchange being Z introducing (as he held up his left hand) the bass player when an audience member yelled out for him to introduce the band. ZZ Top - Pine Knob, Clarkston, MI, Apr. 15, 1980, SBD
Notes:
ZZ Top April 15th, 1980 (Deguello Tour) Pine Knob, Claskston, MI (Speed-Corrected, No TAO Silence Version) Source: Low Gen Analog Soundboard Recording > CD-R > EAC > Sound Forge 4.5 (speed c orrection) > FLAC This is the speed-corrected version of an earlier seed which ran too slow. The spee d was increased using Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 4.5's Pitch effect. This was increa sed by 80.0 Cents on each track. The resulting pitch is that of the original tuning used on the Deguello LP. This was done cross referencing the first track of each r ecording which turns out to be, "I Thank You". In addition, this seed has had the previously present TAO silence removed from each track. Real nice soundboard of a fantastic "Deguello" Tour stop on the outskirts of Detroi t! It's got that lowdown old ZZ sound. A high point of this show is the song "We're Barefootin'", the only known performance of the song. There's the "Crosses Sermon" , from none other than Rev. Willie G. and one helluva La Grange Medley too! Great v ibe and the crowd is insane. Ahhhh, the good 'ol days. 01) I Thank You 02) Waitin' For the Bus 03) Jesus Just Left Chicago (Pine Knob) 04) Precious And Grace 05) Francine 06) I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide 07) Manic Mechanic 08) Heard It On The X 09) Fool For Your Stockings (Crosses Sermon) 10) Nasty Dogs & Funky Kings 11) We're Barefootin' (Only known performance ever!) 12) Cheap Sunglasses 13) Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers 14) La Grange > Sloppy Drunk > BBQ Medley (Extremely odd ~ 9 minute version) 15) She Loves My Automobile (Lone Wolf Horn Section) 16) Hi-Fi Mama (Lone Wolf Horn Section) 17) Tush
