The compiler's introduction to "Neil Young - A Perfect Echo":
NEIL YOUNG: A PERFECT ECHO [1-8]
This is a compilation of soundboard recordings from 1967-2001. The term soundboard is a bit of a misnomer. By soundboard I mean, basically, not an audience recording. Some are true soundboards, while others are FM, TV, ALD, or video-sourced recordings. The recordings were all taken from CDRs or videos that are circulating in the trading community.
Each track was checked out in Cool Edit with headphones, and may have had some cleanup done to remove any odd clicks, hiss, or other sound quality problems. The volume was set on each track so as to have them at similar volumes. Fades were added at the beginnings and ends of each track, so the tracks don't segue, for the most part. There are a couple of segues where successive songs were taken from the same concert, so it still needs to be burned DAO. Most of the banter between tracks was removed to make room for more tracks.
There are a total of 115 tracks (109 songs, as 6 get repeated). Some years were heavy with available recordings (1976 and 1989 come to mind). I tried to balance the set by not using too many songs from a single show. The entire 8 discs run in, roughly, chronological order.
Originally, I started making this as just a personal compilation from my collection. It took about a month to put together, including the planning of what would be included, the remastering of the tracks, and, finally, the creation of the artwork. At first, I didn't have a title and was just going to call it "a soundboard archive." While fixing some soft static in Natural Beauty, the title came to me, when he sang "I heard a perfect echo die...". I was going to call it Perfect Echo Die, but a friend persuaded me to leave off the word "die," so now we have the title A Perfect Echo.
The intent was to make a nice sampling of soundboard recordings from throughout his career. It's sort of like an expanded Rock 'n' Roll Cowboy, with the intent to keep the sound quality higher and more consistent.

NEIL YOUNG: "A PERFECT ECHO," Volume 5
This is a new volume of the well known compilation A Perfect Echo which was compiled in 2001-2002 and made available in early 2002. Meanwhile this compilation is considered as one of the basics for every collection and is well known among all friends of the music of Neil Young.
Now Vol. 5 is available, including Soundboard recordings from the years 1970-1999 (Disc 9) and from 2002-2003 (Disc 10)
Some of the earlier soundboards were "discovered" only recently and consequently Disc 9 is the result. Disc 10 includes tracks from shows which took place after the original Perfect Echo was finished.
Meanwhile even more shows are available in SBD quality (Bonnaroo 2003...), so let's hope for another volume in the future.

I Am A Child TIME: 58:06 LINEAGE: SBD>?>FLAC>WAV>Cool Edit Pro v2.1>FLAC 7 TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES: This is a great show and was a pleasure to remaster. As far as early Young shows go, this one is up there as far as quality and performance are concerned. Perhaps becau se of being in Canada, or Toronto in particular (an old stomping ground for Young in his days with The Squires), this is a great performance by Young. The recording see ms to have come from a soundboard source a few generations down. All in all, the sou nd is still quite good and the vocals have been preserved fairly well. The guitar is obviously low in the mix, probably due to the original mix at the show (the section s of the show where Young plays piano seem more balanced). The vocals are very clear and presented upfront, which is common for large hall such as the massey. Due to th e tape transfers, a fair amount of noise has built up on the recording, causing that well known boomy, bassy presence and obvious loss of high end all to common with an overrecorded tape, or multiple tape transfers. Therefore I cut some of the lower fr equencies causing the boomy and sometimes distorted lower tones and boosted some of the higher frequencies that were lost during the transfers. I also included artwork for this show and gave it a new title, "Going Back To Canada", as per Journey Throug h The Past because of the fact that Young is in Canada (of course!). I hope you enjo y this remastered version of the 1971 Toronto Neil Young show. This is a recording t hat no Young fan should be without. PLEASE READ: Because of the loss of high end frequencies and consequent restoration of high end frequencies, a moderate amount of noise is present in this recording. Th is is not detrimental to the sound in a large degree and is significantly buried on many sections of the recording. upped by: theface07

Sorry, no artwork - perhaps someone can create some Comments: Excellent audience recording from Neil's underrated 1988 big-band tour. This recording comes from the one-week period where Neil was regularly playing both "Ordinary People" and the epic acoustic "Crime in the City," which here clocks in at just under 20 minutes. Neil's in a great mood and the band rocks. I think this sh ow (and the Poplar Creek soundboard from three nights before which started circulati ng a couple of years ago) is the best I've heard Neil Young live. This is worth the d/l just for the passionate "Crime in the City" (the acoustic version of which is e xtremely rare in Neil circles, I believe) but the whole show is a blast. I am not sure of the mike/recorder information, although I believe it may have been done on a Sony D-5. I used Audio Cleaning Lab to take out a little tape hiss; othe rwise this recording is untouched. There was a version of this show that circulated on Sharingthegroove a couple of yea rs ago before its demise; I have no idea if this is the same recording or not. Howe ver, that torrent had a couple of songs cut which the seeder was never able to fix; this is NOT the same torrent. All songs are complete since it comes from my cassett es. Note that a channel cuts in and out briefly during "Ten Men Working" and there is brief, intermittent static during the first couple of songs; I assume this was du e to a microphone cable being loose. The problem was quickly fixed.

Rocking in the Free World Save Mart Center, Fresno, CA 2006-07-23 I make no apologies for including RITFW or SSB, just wouldn't be the same without them! Between them, they make an excellent replacement for the last song off the LWW cd I've tracked by the order songs were played in concert except for 'Looking for a Leader' which has been played only once this tour. Maybe they weren't sure what part of the show to play it. Fits in nicely where I've put it :-) All songs taken off dime. I've used addawave to join tracks together to grab the intros from the end of the previous track where necessary. Normalized files with Wavtrim to play all at the same volume. Goldwave to crossfade where needed. Plays like one continuous concert - NO fades! I can't believe that nobody's not done this already! So here it is in all it's raw and ragged glory. PLAY LOUD and ENJOY!!!!!! If you want to convert to mp3, do it. Neil did!! First uploaded to dime August 22nd 2006 A Rustbucket Production! Hey all, I've put together another Compilation. Now you are probably asking, what compilation is there left to do about Neil? Well, I've looked over Neils career, and noticed that he has done quite a few songs LIVE less than 5 times. With lots of help from "Ghosts On The Road", over the years I've made a binder of ALL Neils songs, and determined how many times he has played these songs LIVE. Doing that took about 6 months in itself, but that's another story. Anyway, I looked over my list, and found that Neil has played 53 songs 5 times OR less in his career. NOW, as I say, I consulted GOTR exclusivly, so I'm going by what is published there. I've broken down the compilation into a 2 disc Acoustic and a 2 disc Electric Compilation. I've named it simply enough, "NEIL YOUNG - 5X or LESS "LIVE" The setlist was broken down in alphabetical order, so you get Neil from all stages of his career mixed up pretty well. The setlist follows with this information. wonderin' man Disc 1 can be downloaded at http://www.bootcity.org/showthread.php?p=51227#post51227 Setlist: Acoustic Vol. 1 The Bridge- 3Xlive, 2/27/71 Country Girl- 4Xlive, 1/11/70 Cripple Creek Ferry- 3Xlive, 7/15/97 Depression Blues- 2Xlive, 2/17/92 Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It?- 2Xlive, 10/24/04 (Neil said HE had never sung it before live, so I included it.)
