Doug Sahm & Friends - Armadillo World HQ, Austin, TX, Nov. 23, 1972, SBD
Notes:
Doug Sahm & Friends Thanksgiving Jam Armadillo World Headquarters Austin, TX 23 November 1972 Soundboard recording, a bit faint in spots, and a few cuts and mic drops here and there. Some of the instruments are faint , like the fiddle in "Orange Blossom Special", and the vocals are loud and raw. You may also see this as a Grateful Dead s how or as "Jerry Garcia & Friends", depending on who the listener favors. Doug's out front singing and Jerry plays pedal s teel for a good part of the night (see included photo). It does sound very Dead-like sometimes though, as you would imagin e. There seem to be two versions of this around (at least), with a few different tracks and the discs broken out differently. "My version" is straight off the CD's I received in trade, but I've made a few track marker changes. Here's how the two v ersions differ: a) In the other version, the three discs are split into 10, 7 and 13 tracks, respectively. b) In the other version, Disc 1 has Track 9 as "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "San Antone" is Track 10. My version does not have "Mr. Tambourine Man," but there is a cut after Track 8, which leaves an opening for the possible missing track. c) My version has two additional songs on Disc 2, "Kentucky Waltz" and "Big Boss Man". d) My source CD Disc 2 has "Columbus Stockade Blues" and "Honky Tonkin'" combined as Track 2. Track 10 was an announcement , a cut, then picks up on "It Takes A Lot to Laugh.." I've split each of these tracks into two, and placed "..Train..." le ading off Disc 3, a cleaner split. Disc 1 01. Hi-Heel Sneakers 02. Honky Tonk Angel 03. Closin' Time 04. Me & Bobby McGee 05. Stormy Monday 06. That's Alright, Mama 07. Come On Into My Kitchen 08. T for Texas 09. Doug Sahm - Rome Inn, Austin, TX, 1979
Notes:
Here is a more complete version of Sir Douglas Quintet, Rome Inn, Austin, Texas, 1979. I have a 19 track version, while stew711 has a 17 track version that was posted here recently. After downloading his and comparing them, mine has 2 tracks not on his, while his has one not on mine. Both versions appear to be edited to fit onto a 74 minute CDR. Some of the long gaps between songs were shortened on mine, and it runs 4.5% fast (thanks stew711 for quantifying this). They appear to be from the same original recording. His copy may be a generation higher, and has slightly better sound to my ears. However, there were several digital errors - clicks, gaps between tracks, and two dropouts. In the end I chose his, and added my speed corrected tracks to it using SoundForge 8.0. I filtered the numerous clicks out with Sonic Foundry Click and Crackle Filter, and removed the between-track gaps. I compared this with my speed corrected versions, and prefer the filtered ones. As a result of combining these, the end product was one minute too long for an 80 minute blank, so it is broken into two disks. More thanks to stew711 for patching his Groover's Paradise which had a large droput with a section from my copy. Bony Maronie also had a brief droput right near the end which I patched from my copy. I can't tell that they have been patched when I listen. I suspect that a more complete version not edited for 74 minute disks exists somewhere. Some of the tracks have slightly different names based on research on All Music Guide: Disk 1 1. Bony Maronie (Larry Williams) 4:13 2. Lonely Lonely Nights (Robert "Bumps" Blackwell/Greg Topper) 3:07 3. Lucille (Al Collins/Richard Penniman) 3:14 4. She's About A Mover (Doug Sahm) 3:04 8. Wasted Days And Wasted Nights (W. Duncan/F. Fender/B. Huerta/H. P. Meaux) > Sometimes (Gene Thomasson) 4:54 9. instrumental (unknown) 9:12 10. Sahm was no stranger to this type of blues endeavor. As early as the late Sixties, he was recording soulful R&B with a horn section. But I'll never forget the first of many times I heard this band, sometime back in the mid-Eighties when Antone's was up on Guadalupe. I'd always been a big fan of the Duke/Peacock sound out of Houston, with its blasting horns and with-it arrangements on those gold and burgundy-labeled Bobby Bland and Junior Parker 45s. And here was Sahm out front, the consummate Texas hipster, barely able to contain himself, somehow orchestrating this airtight, muscular little big band featuring ace San Antonio saxman Rocky Morales and various longtime friends -- positively nailing that sound to the wall! Their moniker, The Last Real Texas Blues Band, was no hyperbole either. They alone, in their home state, were the sole purveyors of this classic, distinct sound. It didn't stop there, either. Sahm's voracious musical appetite had the band devouring virtually every style of blues, R&B, and rock & roll to be found along old Route 90 from New Orleans to San Antone. And let's not forget a Dallas-Ft. Worth shuffle or two just for good measure. Texas music group review - The late Doug Sahm was one of the genuine great (if under recognized) artists of contemporary American music, and the master of all things Texan and musical. His legacy spans just about every genre of contemporary popular music. And some of Sahm's best work can be found on the two albums of Gulf Coast R&B and blues he recorded for Antone's Records: Juke Box Music and The Last Real Texas Blues Band. Originally released in 1988, Juke Box Music united some of Austin's best blues players with Sahm's San Antonio musical compadres to create a classic Texas big-band R&B sound. It was a style that Sahm absorbed from T-Bone Walker, Junior Parker and Bobby "Blue" Bland as a youngster and mastered playing the San Antonio clubs as a teen, finally captured for a full album. The Last Real Texas Blues Band in 1994 found Sahm further refining his take on the style with studio cuts as well as live tracks recorded at Antone's nightclub, offering some of the most soulful sounds to be heard in modern music (and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album). DOUG SAHM - (from AIM Records) The late great Doug Sahm, who died unexpectedly in late 1999, was a genre-defying, musical badass who was equally at home with country, Psychedelic Rock, R&B, all manner of Tex-Mex, and just about any other category of music you might want to throw at him. He began his career as a child prodigy singer/steel guitar player in the bars and clubs of his native San Antonio, Tex., before he reached his teens. He even sat in with Hank Williams shortly before the country legend kicked the bucket. Sahm formed the Sir Douglas Quintet in the mid-1960s and hit the charts twice with the classic pumping Farfisa sounds of "She's About A Mover" and "Mendocino." After the quintet split, Sahm continued to record prolifically. A formidable blues guitarist and stunningly soulful singer, Sahm's music was inextricably linked to Texas. In the '90s Sahm hooked up with Freddy Fender, Flaco Jiminez, and his old buddy Augie Meyers to form the Texas Tornados, a sort of border rock supergroup that enjoyed quite a bit of success. He will be missed. AL GOMEZ - TRUMPET Gomez grew up in a musical household. His dad leads a big band. Two of his sisters are music educators. Gomez worked with keyboard man Sauce Gonzalez in Joe Bravo1s band. In the late '70s, in a West Side joint called the Ooh-La-La, Gomez was introduced to the West Side Horns and the West Side sound. "I was in a tuxedo and carrying my horn. They were playing blues. Man,Gomez said. In the mid-'80s, when trumpeter McBirney opted to quit the road, Gomez stepped into the trumpet spot. He1s an arranger and also a first-call studio player whose work is heard on projects ranging from Tejano discs to songwriter James Talley1s latest, "Touchstones. 1995 Grammy Nomination (R&B), "The Last Real Texas Blues Band" Current Magazine (San Antonio), Ninth Annual Music Awards Best Latin Salsa Group: Henry Brun & The Latin Playerz Notre Dame Jazz Festival, Outstanding Musician Award 1994-95 Texas Minority Graduate Fellowship 1991-94 Music Scholarship, SWTSU, Jazz & Orchestra Ensembles 1992 Music Achievement Award; Wichita, Kansas Jazz Festival (IAJE) 1985 Music Achievement Award; UT Austin Jazz Festival Performance Experience: Current, Dick's Last Resort, San Antonio, Texas 1996 European Tour with Doug Sahm and the Last Real Texas Blues Band; including the Moulin Blues Festival (Ospel, Holland) 1995-96 Corpus Christi Jazz Festival 1996 JAZZ' Alive (San Antonio Jazz Festival) with The Jazz Vatos 1996 Eureka Springs, Arkansas, Jazz Festival with The Jazz Vatos 1995 March-August: U.S. Tour with The Last Real Blues Band and the Texas Tornadoes 1994 European tour with SWTSU Mysterium (composer ensemble) 1994 World Premier, "Rio Bravo Ballet," by Alice Gomez 1993-96 Pura Vida Awards Orchestra ROCKY MORALES -TENOR SAXAPHONE Rocky is the heart and soul of the "West Side Horns" of San Antonio. He has achieved legendary status all over the world and continues to thrill audiences wherever he goes. Morales started playing alto sax in junior high and at Fox Tech High School. The sound of another San Antonian changed his mind. "When I heard Clifford Scott play 'Honky Tonk1 I switched to tenor. That was it, Morales said. Morales began working with Sahm in the Mar-Kays in the early '60s. He played the Eastwood Country Club with Joe & the VIPs, rocked and rolled with Rudy & the Reno Bops, played jumping blues with Randy Garibay and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Sahm on stages around the world. Performance Credits: Doug Sahm, Kim Wilson, Angela Strehli, Lou Ann Barton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert Collins, Augie Meyers, Jackie King,Randy Garibay and many, many others SPOT BARNETT - SAXAPHONE A later addition to the West Side Horns, sax giant Barnett in the late '50s and early '60s was THE bandleader in San Antonio. Though his headquarters were in the Ebony Lounge on the East Side, his influence was felt throughout San Antonio. Barnett1s band, which included future Texas Tornados drummer Ernie "Murphy Durawa, was known for mixing blues, jazz and rock 'n1 roll. Sahm did a bass-playing stint in Barnett1s band and every musician worth his salt made pilgrimages to the Ebony to watch the master work. In the '70s Barnett played sax with Bobby Bland. Through the '80s and most of the '90s Barnett lived in South Bend, Ind. where he worked construction and believed himself retired from the music business. In the late '90s he returned to San Antonio and promptly went back to work leading his own band and joining the West Side Horns. JACK BARBER - BASS Jack is currently touring with the Last Real Texas Blues Band. He is also touring with the Texas Tornadoes and performed on their latest Grammy-nominated album '4 Aces' on the Reprise label. The single, 'A Little Bit is Better than Nada' is the opening track in the Kevin Costner film, 'Tin Cup'. Performance credits include : Sir Douglas Quintet, David Bromberg, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, David "Fathead" Newman, Joseph Latiff, Johnny Winter, Flaco Jimenez, Freddy Fender, Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, Los Lobos, Wayne Jackson (Memphis Horns), Joe Lewis Walker, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Vaughn, Kim Wilson, Asleep at the Wheel, Dr. John, Gene Taylor, Amos Garrett Band, Joe King Carrasco, Johnny Nicholas, Stephen Bruton, Earl King, John Hammond, Delbert McClinton, Boz Scaggs and Roger McGuinn ARTURO "Sauce GONZALEZ - piano and organ The Hammond B-3 is his first love. "But it1s too heavy to carry around, he says with a laugh. Sauce1s dad played piano at the house but "the radio was my college. Influenced by the sounds of Jimmy Smith, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis, Sauce played with Sunny & the Sunglows, Little Joe, Joe Bravo, the Drifters, the Coasters and others. He can play polkas, but he loves the blues. In the '70s he began working with Sahm. For a while he split time between Sahm1s various groups and Miss Lavelle White1s Blues and Soul Situation. Now he leads The West Side Sound, a blues/R&B band that usually includes at least one member of the West Side Horns. ROY HEAD - Texas soul man Roy Head epitomizes Gulf Coast cool like no one else. Originally discovered by San Antonio's T `N' T (short for Tanner `N' Texas) Records wailin' out an R&B-laced style of rockabilly with his sizzling band the Traits, Head cut the great "One More Time" in '59 and followed it up with "Live It Up" and "My Baby's Fine." After a brief sojourn to Renner Records and a heap of stage work that boiled his style down to leanest of the lean and the rawest of the raw, he busted out with a potent double-sider that supercharged Big Joe Turner's "Teenage Letter" and backed it with the soul-searing ballad "Pain." Then, in 1965 he crashed the gates, take-no-prisoners style with "Treat Her Right," which rose to number two on the Billboard Pop charts. If you're wondering why they never play this song on Oldies radio stations, just dig its wrecking-crew power! Roy continued in this vein, cracking the top 100 with "Just A Little Bit" and "Get Back Part 1," and laying down other material that was just too wild for any chart, including the fabulous "You're (Almost) Tough." In 1970 he cut his swan song LP for Dunhill, The Same People You Meet Going Up You Meet Coming Down. Produced by Huey P. Meaux, one of the world's great mysteries is just why this album-replete with great "break beats"-isn't coveted by the funk/ hip-hop DJ crowd But don't ponder, purchase!! It still sells for under ten bucks and is a true cornerstone in any Gulf Coast music collection. For one thing, the backing musicians are completely out of hand: funky drums, out-of-control bass lines, over-the-top fuzz guitars, screeching Ornette-Coleman style saxophone and trumpet and above it all, Roy testifying with every ounce of sweat and soul his body, mind and spirit can muster. Lord, have mercy!!! There's just no arguing with the best. The song selection, alas, couldn't be better. T.K. Hulin's swamp pop classic "I'm Not A Fool Anymore," Jimmy Hughes' "Neighbor, Neighbor," Jackie Payne's "Go-Go Train" (masquerading as "Soul Train") and the BEST version of the Sir Douglas Quintet's "She's About A Mover" ever recorded. Yes, perhaps even better than the original, hardly a fair comparison because Roy strips the proceedings down to their rawest funkified core. And speaking of Sir Doug, Head even fronted the Texas Tornadoes for a tour when Freddy Fender couldn't make the gig, and if he was any more intense back in the `60s then he was a few years ago, well, he certainly hasn't lived up to the title of one of the songs from that aforementioned album, "Don't Want To Make It Too Funky." You won't be able to take your eyes (or ears) off Head when he's onstage, but just watch out: this man's antics with a microphone are akin to an electrified boomerang. Gypsy Tea Room - http://asp6.catalog.com/gypsytearoom.com/ The Gypsy Tea Room is located at 2548 Elm Street - Deep Ellum, Texas 75226 The Gypsy Tea Room was opened by The Entertainment Collaborative in March of 1998. Voted best live music venue two years in a row, the Gypsy Tea Room brings big local favorites and national acts to town. The front club swings on Wednesday nights and the back room has a revolving lineup of laidback jazz, head-banging metal, and enough moshing to make you think you're in London. Whatever your musical taste, the Gypsy Tea Room strikes a chord. - D Magazine July 2000 The Gypsy Tea Room is arguably the finest live venue in Dallas at the moment, its old school take on getting the job done outshining the Curtain Club's good intentions or Trees' recent rebound. Attending a concert at the Gypsy Tea Room is like going to Sons Of Herman Hall two decades ago, if it were located at the corner of Nashville's Music Row and Sixth Street in Austin. The club not only brings in some of the best acts in the country, but it does so with a sense of class and style that is sorely lacking everywhere else in Dallas. - Dallas Observer, March 25-31, 1999

Boz Scaggs
Boz Scaggs - "The Live Silk Degrees," 1976
Notes:
Boz Scaggs "The Live Silk Degrees" with soon-to-be Toto backup band! Great Soundboard . A killer groove! mp3 sample included This concert was recorded, probably in 1976, with the all-star band which soon left t o become Toto. It is an astounding soundboard, and perhaps the best recording ever to come from TAKRL. You will not believe this show came from vinyl! It is close to perf ect in every way. To make it even better, they are performing songs from the "Silk Degrees" album. As g ood as that album is, this show leaves that album in the dust. Boz and the band were clearly loving the attention and it shows in the attention they gave to making this a s perfect an event as could be. The "Silk Degrees" album invaded the charts, and just hung there for weeks and weeks. The music just makes you feel good. Although this LP would be later known as "Jump Street Jive Drive", my copy is an adva nce pressing with a totally different insert. Printed on blue paper, it has a collage of Playboy cartoons. It just says "only good Boz songs" on the insert. The pressing was probably better also, which is why it sounded so quiet. Throw this on, take your shoes off, and shaakee it, baybe! Setlist: Lowdown You Make It So Hard What Can I Say This Time Jump Street Slow Dancer It's Over Lido Shuffle It Seems So Long Since You've Been Gone Band Intros I Got Your Number Lineage: TAKRL 1964 ->Layla 3G ->Soundforge 6.0 ->light brushing with Click and Crack le removal tool ->"Dead Space" noise reduction. ** SOUNDBOARD DAT-master, MWM 0082 **
Europe's premier Americana artist with mp3's
This recording here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archive.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.
"Freddie Krc is a true, dedicated musician. He is one of the most knowledgeable and
liked musicians in the business. He's played on and off with me for twenty years.
He is always upbeat and cheerful, and that's not easy on long, grinding tours.
I consider him a friend and have the highest regard for his work."
- Jerry Jeff Walker
"Great guitars, great songs, great records."
- Peter Lewis, Moby Grape
"This band's got chops and knows how to nasty."
- Cyril Jordan, The Flamin' Groovies
"I want to thank Freddie for being there every time I needed him."
- Roky Erickson
"I'm trying to create my own breed of Americana. When I was a kid, the bands I loved
- the Byrds, Moby Grape and Buffalo Springfield - took all these influences and mixed 'em
up into something uniquely their own. And since I grew up with all sorts of music - cajun,
blues, rock, country, conjunto and psychedelic -- that's what I'm trying to do today."
- Freddie Steady Krc
About Freddie:
From Austin to Prague, from San Francisco to London, Freddie "Steady" Krc has plied his
musical trade for more than twenty years. Decendant from a line of talented Czechoslovakian
musicians, Freddie has kept the family tradition alive by providing his music to people all
over the globe. His drum playing has provided the "Steady" beat for Jerry Jeff Walker and
the Gonzo Compadres for many years. He has also played back up for artists as diverse as
Carole King and Roky Erickson and fronted several of his own bands as well as his current
band, The Shakin' Apostles:
Freddie "Steady" Krc was born Alfred Edward Krc (rhymes with birch) on April 17, 1954
in Houston, Texas. His parents, Pauline and Alfred, soon moved Freddie and his older
sister Kathy to the Gulf Coastal town of LaPorte, Texas. It was here in LaPorte, as
Freddie grew up during the 1960's, that his unique musical style began to take shape.
Freddie is closely related to members of the Ray Krenek Orchestra, a family polka band
that has existed in Texas since the mid-1800's. While this relationship had an influence
on his musical direction, it was the more modern sounds of England, and San Francisco
combined with American folk music that molded his musical tastes. Freddie reacted to the
"British Invasion" by arming himself with a pair of drumsticks and joining his first band
("The Sound Kings") at the age of ten. He began his formal musical training at LaPorte
Elementary School and continued with both school and private lessons until graduating
from LaPorte High School. Freddie says that some of the largest influences on his musical
direction came from The Beatles, Moby Grape, and Woody Guthrie.
After graduating from high school Freddie attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville
Texas. Here he majored in theology, while preparing for the ministry. However, his calling
came from another area, music. He left college in 1973 and played in a cover band before
moving to Austin in January of 1974.
Austin has been Freddie's base ever since. Although he has spent extended periods of time
in San Francisco, Los Angeles and London, he has always maintained his permanent residence
in Austin. It was in his new found home of Austin that he hooked up with B.W. Stevenson in
1975. This marked the beginning of his recording career. He played with Stevenson on the
Warner Brothers label, Steven Fromholtz on Capital, and Denim on Epic, all in 1976. It was
here also that The Explosives were formed and played backup for Roky Erickson. They then
moved on to the Punk scenes of San Francisco and Los Angeles.
One of Freddie's longest running musical relationships was with Austin icon Jerry Jeff Walker.
Freddie first recorded with Jerry Jeff on the 1977 MCA release A Man Must Carry On and later
that same year, Contrary To Ordinary. This classic JJW recording remains one of Freddie's
favorite albums. Freddie continued to record with Jerry Jeff through Walker's Electra
recordings, Jerry Jeff (Nacona Boot) and Too Old To Change.
In the late 70's and into the 80's Krc put much of his efforts into The Explosives. While
this punk trio (Waller Collie on bass, Cam King on lead guitar, Freddie Krc on drums) took
up much of his time, Freddie also recorded with other artists during this era. Some of those
artists were Carol King, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Ponty Bone and Wes McGhee.
During the 1980's Freddie's music became increasingly popular in the United Kingdom. He spent
a great deal of time in London and found European audiences very appreciative of American
country music. During this period he recorded Freddie Steady's Wild Country - Lucky 7 in England.
This album was first released in America and later in the UK.
While playing in London Freddie made contacts that eventually led him to return to his ancestral
homeland of Czechoslovokia. After long negotiations, he was able to work out a recording deal
with the Czechoslovakian government record label. However, before the deal could be completed,
a revolution put an end to the government record label, and to the government itself. After the
revolution, Freddie was again able to secure a recording contract in Czechoslovakia, this time
with a private record label. The result is the 1990 release When The Wall Came Down.
As Jerry Jeff reemerged as a musical force in the late 1980's and into the 1990's, Freddie joined
him as the drummer in his band, "The Gonzo Compadres." Freddie spent years on the road, over 200
nights a year, with Jerry Jeff, John Inmon and Bob Livingston. This foursome is the backbone of
the six albums Walker released in the 90's.
In 1990 Freddie formed "The Shakin Apostles", a band billed as playing "Electric Western Folk-Rock".
John Inmon joined Freddie on the two CD's that the band has released, "The Shakin' Apostles" released
in 1993 and "Tucson" released in 1995. In late 1996 a German Record company (Blue Rose Records)
released a CD "Austin, Texas" that is a mix of songs from the first two CD's plus a number of previously
unreleased live cuts. In 1997, Blue Rose released the band's third regular CD, "Medicine Show".

The Shakin' Apostles:
The Shakin' Apostles have a style that has been described as Electric Western Folk-Rock. Upon first
hearing the sounds of this talented Texas band most people are hard pressed to categorize them.
There are obvious links to Rock and Roll and a deep connection to the renegade country sound of
the Austin area. But the rich and varied backgrounds of the band members leave a unique musical
signature that is best left undefined, for the sound is truly theirs alone.
The band is fronted by Austin music veteran Freddie Steady Krc. Freddie has been backed by a host
of solid musicians on the various releases, including Jerry Jeff Walker's long time lead guitar
player, John Inmon. Cam King, the late Danny Thorpe, Greg Jackson and Ronnie Johnson have contributed
their well respected talents as well. Many Texas music icons, such as Jerry Jeff, Lloyd Maines,
Champ Hood and Ponty Bone make appearances on individual cuts.
Concerning the lineup (back then) of the band, Freddie says "I bumped into Waco Jack McVey at the
Saxon Pub a couple of years ago, and asked him to audition on drums. Jack's been with me ever since.
Having Bradley Kopp come on board was tremendous. He knows the business inside and out and is as
good a lead player as you'll find. Having the experience and talent of a guy like Mark Andes holds
the whole band together."
The self titled Shakin' Apostles debut CD and their second endeavor, "Tucson" were released by
ESD Records. Those recordings are essential and A MUST HAVE for every good alternative country/
americana/insurgent country collection. Blue Rose Records of Germany released a compilation of
these first two CD's titled "Austin, Texas." This album also included previously unreleased tracks
and some live recordings. Guest musicians on these bonus tracks: Mike Wilhelm (San Francisco's
Charlatans), John Ike Walton and Ronnie Leatherman (13th Floor Elevators) among others.
German Press spent lavish praise, Musik Express/Sounds gave 5 of six stars, swarming: "ultimate
compositional and technical quality, high above average", Goeppingen's MWZ was maximum judging:
"an extremely explosive mixture with Country, Cajun, Blues and Rock - Apostels keeps on dancing..."
In November of 1997 Blue Rose released a new CD titled "Medicine Show".
The European distribution of the Shakin' Apostles material has met with a great deal of success.
Critics on both sides of the Atlantic have sung the praises of this uniquely American band.
With four quality releases in their saddlebags, the band took "Medicine Show" on the road throughout
Europe in April of 1998.
"Medicine Show" was released in the US on "Big Tex" records and is distributed by Sundazed Records.
This relationship continues with the spring 2000 release of the Shakin' Apostles live recording,
"Too Hot For Snakes".

About this concert:
This is the second concert of a four-week-tour (April 09 to May 03, 1998) with 18 shows as
headliner - 15 of them with opening act Markus Rill (solo), one supporting world famous
group 'BRINGS', a 'HO*T FM session' at Hof, and a living room concert at our home...
Bernie was on this tour not only the roadmanager, driver and merchandiser, but also 'chief
cook & bottle washer' and, more important, dry nurse; we acted as hosts for them a few times.
Step into the night
... and follow Freddie Krc and The Shakin' Apostles as they rock one of Germany's legendary night spots.
This recording here brings you into the Texas world of "dim lights, thick smoke, and loud, loud music".
You can feel the band shake the walls of Goeppingen's "'Odeon' im Alten E-Werk" as you are captured by
the intricate images of Krc's lyrics in this 1998 live recording. If you missed the performance, then
there is no longer reason to fret. Just open the door to this torrent here; remember to turn it way up,
and step into the night.
All of Krc's formidable talent and love of music is evident on this offering. You can sense the elation
that he and his band carried onto stage with them that spring night. These are no "purdy boy" corporate
rockers or some "Ken-doll country" hat act. These are real live Texas musicians playing from the gut for
the pure love of the song.
Few have loved the song more fully, faithfully and passionately than Krc. His diverse musical interests
and influences can be glimpsed through his countless songs included on this release, great melodies, fine
arrangements and part-singing harmony vocals in the tradition of the old country rock heroes like Poco,
Eagles, Flying Burrito Brothers, Moby Grape or Buffalo Springfield. Freddie's days of playing drums for
punk legend Roky Erickson are visible and audible by Krc's own exemplary psychedelic lead guitar work
(usually playing rhythm guitar...), and during the 28 songs of this more-than-two-hours-long concert here
the gifted lead guitarist Pat Kelly, drummer-animal 'Waco' Jack McVey and bass player guru Bryan Jaska
get enough opportunity to display their talents.
Krc is not afraid to step back and let his band shine, and shine they do. Krc's original material has
become a virtual showcase for his current band. Long time fans will not be disappointed by the live
versions of songs from the bands' four previous CD's. This band has been together now for about one year,
before they have toured Europe together, they are now fused into a tight group that is able to follow
Freddie wherever he may dare to go. Those that have witnessed a Krc performance know that you never know
where he may turn next. Anything from a Quicksilver Messenger Service rocker to a Burl Ives medley may
jump from Freddie's brain, and these boys are able to follow.
The masterful recording of Odeon's soundman coupled with some judicious studio work by the tracking skills
of Leo Lonetaper has produced an impressive recreation of the band's live performance. The energy and power
of the night has not been lost. The musicians' performances remain human and tense. Rarely does a live
recording capture the character of an evening as well as THIS ONE HERE. "You should have been there" is
a line often uttered about nights at the 'Odeon'. At least this time, you can get the next best thing.

This is a reseed of a torrent that appeared some months ago on Dime A Dozen. Unfor
tunately for the first time around, there
were diginoise issues. I had a listen to my download recently, before burning it t
o disc, and spent some time cleaning it
up. First off, there were gaps of silence between all the tracks. I removed these
, so that they flow seamlessly now.
There was also the occasional digital click or series of clicks. Most of these wer
e cleaned up with little problem. A few
of the series of clicks, more like a short crackle, were unable to be fixed. This
resulted in a couple of words being
chopped. The other occured during a between song monologue, and its removal isn't
as noticeable. While not perfect, this
is IMO an upgrade. I'd like to have an exact copy of an original silver disc bootl
eg, but until that time, this is a
reasonable alternate. I much prefer to listen to a concert with no digital errors
introduced due to poor extraction and/or
burning somewhere in the trade chain.
I am uncertain as to what medium this was source was taken from, but the sound qual
ity is pretty good for a show almost 50
years old. Perhaps it was just meant for radio play way back when, or maybe for an
album - who knows? If anyone has any
more information about this gig, please let us know on the message thread.
I've made some MP3 sound clips and will post them separately. Artwork has been tou
ched up a bit, and is inside the torrent.
Hope you like it, and share as much live Sinatra as you can! Gone, but not forgott
en, right?

Sly and the Family Stone
Sly and the Family Stone - "Thee Thesaurus of Funkasaurus: Rarities Compilation"
Notes:
Big 'Fro historical notes continued.... So now the Stevie had come out and I only had about 2/3 of the Sly disc ready to go. I HAD enough Sly stuff to fill 2 discs, but the source of the rest of the stuff ori ginated from somebody I did not want to deal with in any way any longer and had I us ed that material I would have been beholden to this person - the last thing I wanted ! The Japanese were calling and emailing me about once a week wondering when I was going to send them the Sly master and I was very concerned that in the end I might b e forced to use the material I had from this source. Then suddenly out of the blue, Big P came into my life. He had the same material - and then some - in the same qual ity (and in the case of 5 tracks in better quality) as what I had. We worked out an arrangement and he sent me what he had. Now I had more than I needed for 2 discs :-) . The Sly fanatic in Japan really wanted to do the artwork on the Sly release so I g ave him the final setlist and go ahead to get started on it. After doing some more w ork on the tapes (again mostly making the stuff sound as good as I could with the eq uipment I had) and was satisfied that I had put together the best Sly disc possible I sent the masters to Japan. I at this point was assuming there would be 4 Sly relea ses on Big 'Fro total: This one, the unreleased Fillmore show, a third release with mostly studio outtakes and a final disc with some of the lesser quality live stuff a nd the tracks not used for the first release (How many different live versions of th e same song does anybody really want on one release anyway? I figured the remaining versions of Everyday People, Higher and Dance To The Music could wait). When this fi nally came out the overwhelmingly positive response and desire for the set truly sur prised me - I was expecting Sly fans would be thrilled, but it seemed like everybody wanted a copy of this title. The Japanese in turn saw the success of the Stevie and Sly releases and were very pleased on their end and now left the continuing release s (more or less) up to me and were willing to release pretty much anybody I sent the m a Big 'Fro master for at my own discretion. They agreed after this release to use the artwork I sent them for any Big 'Fro release as well.... -- durian1 Sly & The Family Stone "Thee Thesaurus Of Funkasaurus" (Rarities Compilation - slightly abridged*) Source:"Thee Thesaurus Of Funkasaurus" Big 'Fro Bootleg (BF-003/4) Lineage:SBD>CD(Original Silvers)>EAC(secure mode/offset correct)>WAV>FLAC(A) D1: [60:50] 01. For myself, I first came a cross this collection in 2002 at a Northeastern US record convention where bootleg c dr's were sold. I had never seen a Sly boot and my jaw hit the floor when I found t his one. I was like Mike Myers in Wayne's World thinking "Oh yes - she will be mine !" and I took that Sly bootleg home that day (I think I paid $15 for it). When I la ter started sharing shows via bit torrent, this was one the first ones I wanted to u pload. Like durian1, I sought to increase the profile and presence of blues, funk, r&b and soul music in the trading community and Big 'Fro boots really fit the bill. I love my Beatles, Stones, Zep, Floyd and Zappa as much as the next guy, but where could you go for Aretha, Eddie Hazel, JB or Otis Redding? Anyway, this was one of m y first seeds at STG, upped Nov '03 with this lineage: CDR>EAC(secure/offset -460)>W AV>dBpowerAMP>FLAC. It was very well received at the time (I think it saw over a th ousand dl's), and I subsequently reseeded it once or twice, so that file set spread pretty far and wide. Now I'm pleased to help share this upgraded lineage (albeit sl ightly abridged) version, complete with cover art. Enjoy it in good health, and in the immortal words of Forrest Gump, "that's all I have to say about that." -- bcc32065 Quality Note: The sound quality is varied, but predominantly very good. Perfectionis ts, be warned; these recordings do have some limitations and the occasional minor an alog artifact. The standard ethical appeals apply to all offers - Please... 1) Continue seeding after DL 2) Trade/Share freely 3) Never for sale 4) No lossy distribution 5) Enjoy thoroughly!

(some yells) really ? you guys, you notice like you s it around, you go Whats the matter ? you know, were as good as them cats, howcome we aint got a record and stuff ? so.....so we was sitting around one night, we, trying to figure out what we was missing....we knew all the guys played pretty good and we re playing the right material and we had a, we knew we had like teen appeal, we had a bass player that got a long hair, right (some cheers) see, all the girls, the girl s always like the bass player with a long hair, (?) hes so quiet, hes so shy, hes (? ) get that joke, right (chuckles) yeah, they always like the bass player (chuckles) used to always go for that stuff so we figured whats the matter, we should have it c overed, you know, but yet we was missing something so it was late, like three, it wa s four in the morning and me and Steve were walking north down the boardwalk, all de pressed and stuff, right.....as you see Steve had his guitar with him, he always car ried his guitar with him, never trusted nobody like with it and he was practising al l the time, before he went to Miami and became known as Miami Steve, he was known as the Great Practiser, you see (chuckles) so.....so there he was practising, right, a nd there we was walking....real dark, nastiest night of the year, a nasty night, col d, it was cold, it was hot, it was raining, it was snowing (chuckles) if it was bad, it was happening (chuckles) and all of a sudden, just like that, all of a sudden do wn the end of the boardwalk, we see something coming at us, we dont know what it is, I didnt know what it is, Steve didnt know what it was, did you ? (Steve: I dont kno w what it is) he didnt know what it was....(Steve: Its big, I know that) all we knew was it was real big and was like some sort of mist coming (?) as it got closer we c ould see that here come this cat, the biggest guy we ever seen, all dressed in white .....walking, right, now, walking like it aint no, walking like it aint raining, lik e it aint snowing, like the wind aint blowing, walking like its a summer day, 75 deg rees (chuckles)....right....now, you would figure that we was a little scared at thi s, right ? we was, we was a little scared, we wasnt too scared, you know, you know, we got, we walked down a little closer, we figured we aint gonna take no chances, al l we wanna do is get home, turn on the Late Late Show, get in the sack, throw in som e Pop-Tarts, (?) and relax, right.....so we figured were gonna duck into this doorwa y and wait till whatever this is.....blows by....so we duck, were hiding in the door way, right, like this, we hear the footsteps coming closer.... man, were, were getti ng a little nervous now, footsteps coming even closer....(?)....he didnt do that, di d he ? didnt blow....instead of that, he turns and faces (?)....now, we stood there for a second....we knew we was in trouble cause this guy, he wasnt gonna hit us with a stick, he wasnt gonna shoot us with a gun or stab us with a knife, he was gonna b eat us to death with what appeared to be a saxophone....(?) so Steve pushed me out t here and me being the Boss, you gotta show a little leadership (chuckles)(?) you run your own band, you gotta show leadership....I got out there and I tried to act (?) figured Dont act like youre scared, you know....(Steve: He aint going for that) he d idnt go for it, all he did was pick up the saxophone (Clarence plays) at that point we threw all our money on the ground.... threw down my hat.....and begged for our li ves (chuckles) all this cat did was put out his hand (the source tape is missing the ending).... 12.09.75 Austin, TX, intro to Kittys back I got this, I got this phonecall, they called the office, the managers office, this, uh.... this We Magazine, you know that magazine that has all the pictures of the gi rls on the cover and stuff....I got, really, uh (chuckles) its the truth (chuckles) I got this phonecall, right, from this We Magazine, they was doing a poll.....you kn ow, a poll like, funny things, and, and they wanna know if I ever seen a flying sauc er....right, so course I told em Sure, you know, Yeah, Ive seen flying saucers....an d.....it happened, I seen my flying saucer when....it was back in (?) hometown many years ago....yeah, thats where it was (chuckles) was many, was many years ago that m e and Clarence lived in this house that had this, uh, on this, on this regular-type street that had this rotten, this tomato patch across the street, you see, and one d ay me and Clarence was sitting on the, uh....sitting on the porch, you know, just si tting there and I was, I was about 15, I guess, you know and uh.....and all of a sud den we seen this thing shaped like a hot dog, right, was shaped just like a hot dog, you see, it was in the sky, it wasnt flying smooth, it was flying like (?) came dow n in the field, you see, it came down into the tomato patch, now, this tomato patch we used to go over and we used to have tomato fights, you know, when we were kids (? ) pick out rotten tomatoes, Hey! Outro + * Dec. 3, 2001 ** Dec. 4, 2001 + Dec. 8, 2001 Review http://www.euronet.nl/~everhaar/thepromise/ Almost three months after the Holiday shows by Bruce Springsteen, the Max Weinberg Seven and Frien ds in Asbury Park, Crystal Cat Records (CCR) has released Jingle Bells Night. Although many Spring steen fans with an internet connection will have gotten their hands on one or more of the December 2001 shows through a trade or a tree, the CCR label fortunately deemed it necessary to release th e December 7 show. Fortunately, because CCR has become a guarantee for fine releases in very good sound quality over the years, and this release sounds better than the recordings that have been ci rculating over the internet. Packaging of the set is fairly decent, something CCR usually puts qui te some work into. There are a few errors in the songtitles in the tracklisting and the live photo s (not from the December 7 show but from the next night) are not superb, but due to the very stric t security photographers had a very hard time doing their job. All in all it's a small miracle in itself that any photos have come out of the Convention Hall. CCR has chosen to release the 4th Holiday show (December 7). It's especially the last show, that w as the longest and featured the most special guests, that has spread through the internet. Of cour se we don't know whether this is the reason CCR released the December 7 show, but it's a fact that with this one they picked the best show. The opening is already phenomenal, when after the horns intro 'Deck The Halls' Bruce kicks off the concert with the piano version of 'Incident On 57th Str eet'. It's a shame the way two American ladies keep talking near the microphone of the taper, chos ing this precious moment to discuss every day life. The concert takes a hilarious turn when Bruce Hornsby is called on stage. After a Chistmas medley on piano and a beautiful duet with Springsteen on 'The End Of The Innocence', Hornsby gets to brin g in his accordion for 'You Sexy Thing', a Hot Chocolate cover. A unique choice of repertoire for Springsteen. At the start of Southside Johnny's song 'This Time It's For Real' something happens with the taper 's microphone, causing the sound quality to become a little less for a while. Fortunately this is only for a short period of time, and sound quality for the remainder of the show is fine again. Th at the show is (one of) the best of the week in Asbury Park is also clear from Bruce's words befor e the encores, when he thanks the audience with the words: "Great show, great audience." The bonustracks are from the other four Holiday shows and are of lesser sound quality. Unfortunate ly, CCR couldn't cram all the other songs played on the third disc. A bit odd is the choice to inc lude a part of Bruce's spoken intro to 'My City Of Ruins' from the last show as the final track of the set. The track is called "Bruce Thanks Backstreets and others" (CCR probably finds it so uniq ue that Bruce mentioned Backstreets magazine that this influenced the decision). As a result of th is, the songs by Garland Jeffreys and the South Community Choir get completely ignored. Judging fr om the response by the audience, these were the least appreciated songs during the shows and there fore they'll probably won't be missed that much. Especially Garland Jeffreys got a cool reception by the audience, leading to an angry reaction by Bruce on December 6th. To be able to hear all the songs played during the Holiday shows, Springsteen fans can try to get a recording of the last ni ght as well. With some use of the internet this can't be too hard.

John Stewart : Tampa, FL - 4 & 5 October 1973 - UPGRADE I seeded this one some time ago here. Although disc 1 (the radio interview) is the same, I have since found a better version of disc 2 (the concert). The quality and clarity is far better than the one previously posted. I knew this version existed a nd have been looking for it for about 30 years - I've finally found it and would lik e to share it with you all. Artwork included. This is a "must have" recording - one of the best concerts I've heard. I wouldn't ever pretend to decide what is the right order - you get it as the taper of this (and other Canadian sets) sent it to me. There are some small hints thet could speak for the version of the taper: 1.the problems with the volume levels at the beginning of this what he calls early s et (I corrected them just a little bit). 2. The fact, that he runs out of tape in the middle of what he calls late set (his e arly set is almost missing only the first few notes of "What's New" after the tape f lip) Well - you decide Some minor flaws: the above mentioned problems with the volume level in the beginnin g of the early set. The speeding up of the tape in the last minut of the last song o f the late set. Please give your thanks to Mr Ra and the Arkestra musicians for the beautiful music and to the taper for his job.
