Mahavishnu Orchestra - Boston Symphony Hall, Jan. 26, 1972
Notes:
The Mahavishnu Orchestra Boston Symphony Hall 1972-01-26 Here then is the opening act for the Jerry Garcia Howard Wales concert posted yester day. The source is a bit different, it's a (bought) bootleg cassette, which I acquir ed in the early 1980's. Not much high end in the beginning, but it improves steadily . The fact that this was the opening act was news to me. There was no date listed on t he cassette case, just "Boston Symphony Hall". And, there you go. And, here it is. Setlist Meeting of The Spirits You Know You Know Dance Of The Maya A Lotus On Irish Streams Miles Ahead The Noonward Race. Several looong jams, performed with a certain finesse not found in some other MO rec ordings. In other words, they don't sound like a rabid dog in this one!!! Don't shoo t your poster for saying that, I love the Mahavishnu Orchestra. But, listening to so me of it live while driving can make you think of going bowling... with the other ca rs. This concert doesn't have that effect, I don't think it does anyway. Enjoy! A DoinkerTape MaxellXLII60 unknown generation ->Sound Forge "dead space" noise reduction, track sp litup, Flac Frontend level 8, sectors aligned and verified. I don't know if this is the complete set or not, it's all I have.

On "Vital Transformation" their is some 10 or 15 seconds missing audio at the 6 min mark, I made reduced the gap to only one second "Dance of Maya" is not complete ends one minute into McLaughlin's solo as they never finished a show with that song there should be more of this concert. a front and back CD cover is included print and then cut off the outer black border line..... ** hint ** the front looks nice on glossy paper The back cover is rotated this is for word processors that by default "shrink images to fit page width" .... this should solve that problem! A soundboard but it has been tampered with you hear the difference with "Dance of Maya" it comes from the collector in Paris France who was a friend of John McLaughlins 3rd wife Genevieve Renoult?? (the cello player) he got some tapes through her but when he no longer had contact with her or McLaughlin (when they split up) he started to trade but to cover his tracks he mixed tapes up with parts from different shows and also used an equaliser to alter the sound, maybe some expert audio restorer can fix them. Believe me it was a frustrating experience to trade with him but there are people much worse than him in trading circles. It's possible he traded a decent copy with someone I don't know if he is still around most people I know traded with him once or twice and ended up throwing any of his tapes away as they can't work out what he's done. Once I sent him a tape with some one minute samples of new shows and he sent me back a tape with one minute samples and all the shows he had sent me as low quality were now A+ quality, I can't find the sample tape .... it was 10 years ago .... not interested in contacting him just curious to know what became of him and if anyone got decent copies of the 1972/1973 shows if you traded with him you will know who I am talking about!!

Now this is really rare, and I'm pleased to share this piece of history !!! Here is a quote by Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival : "At that time, in parallel with the Montreux Jazz Festival, which I founded in 1967, I was organising other concerts throughout the year and, in 1972, I was fortunate e nough to welcome The Mahavishnu Orchestra. A concert that took place at the Pavillon some eight months after the fire at the Montreux Casino. To my great regret, this c oncert was not recorded" So this is the concert missing in the John McLaughlin at Montreux box set. It may no t have been recorded on a multi-track machine, but it was indeed recorded to two tra cks, by the Swiss National Radio. This recording was given to me about 28 years ago I guess, by someone who used to wo rk at the radio station, and who is now dead. They're supposed to keep everything at the radio station (and I've been told they are in the process of transferring old t apes to digital media), but sometimes they lose recordings, or they get stolen... So my copy may be the only one STILL IN EXISTENCE, and it's also possible it's never b een broadcast. It's the full concert as it seems. I remember the electric power went down during the concert, but I don't remember at which point it happened. What else can I say ? The concert really took place a little more than 30 years ago, I was about to turn 17, and I attended it. At the time, I think I only knew John M cLaughlin from the Tony Williams Lifetime / Turn it Over LP, and from his Devotion a lbum. Listening to the tape, you'll only get a vague idea of how GREAT this concert truly was ! To me the music was so new, so fresh and innovative, most people in the audien ce were smilling ! Still one of the best concerts I attended in my whole life ! I remember reading a John McLaughlin interview in a magazine, in which he said this one concert had been particularly good. Also there was a yoga convention taking plac e in the same building at the time, and he said he thought there was kind of a vibe in the whole building for that reason. As an aspiring (and now pro) drummer, it was also the first time I'd heard Billy Cobham, and that was a real inspiration ! Like I said, at a point during the concert the electric power went down, and Billy took a long solo without the P.A. to entertain us during the break. About the fire at the Montreux Casino, which happened during a Frank Zappa concert a bout eight months before, I also attended it, but that's another story ! A.R. August 8, 2005

It is indexed differently and came with the correct song names. It was obtained by m ail in December 1999. The included artwork, however, matches the original song label ing of captainbongo's show, which indicates his version may be closer to the origina l, however, has not been upgraded. Regarding the fidelity - it is from the same source (as indicated by the guy coughin g between songs), however has some interesting differences. Primarily, someone clean ed up all the low end muddiness. By comparison it might appear tinny, however it is much easier to listen to on a big Hi Fi. I used my big rig and did an A-B test with two cd players running through a Denon AV R-3802 (110 watts rms 20-20), a B & W 10" (150w) Subwoofer, and two Vienna Acoustic [Mozart] fronts ($2,500.00 speakers - NOT CHEAP!). The results were clearly audible. The clarity of the instruments is about the same, however, the very heavy mid-low in my version is missing. Enjoy wenospeak

Notes:
Here is my contribution to the Mahavishnu festival that's been going on the last week or so. I recorded this show myself and have only traded it maybe once so it's a rare one. It's an audience recording and not too bad sounding. Not as good as some but better than others that I've downloaded recently. Everyone knows the personnel...same as on the "Apocalypse" recording. Keep and eye out as I'm going to try and post a show from the "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" period in the next few days. Mp3 sample below. - The concert wasn't in Chester, England, but actually took place in a town called
Connah's Quay just across the borders in Wales, where the Deeside Leisure Centre is
located, usually used as an ice rink, property of the English town of Chester.
- The sound is very clear, almost no hiss and no audience noise.
- The show is likely incomplete ("Could You Be Loved?" cuts after about one minute)
; according to a newspaper article the show has been closed with "Get Up, Stand Up"
which is missing here. probably more songs (for example maybe "Kinky Reggae", "Roo

Curtis Mayfield
Curtis Mayfield - "Keep on Keepin' On," Live and Studio Rarities
Notes:
Big 'Fro historical notes continued... When me and Big P first started corresponding we discussed what we would love to se e on Big 'Fro one day. Both of us desperately wanted to do a Donny Hathaway release but we had no material and no sources for any material. My next "big one" now that the Sly was out of the way, was an Ike & Tina Turner release. But so far I only ha d 2 or 3 tracks for that one. Another for me was to do the ultimate Otis Redding re lease. Big P in turn wanted to do a Curtis Mayfield as his "dream release" - everyt hing from the track selection to the artwork. I told him to go for it and in 2 week s I received the master for this one and an email with the completed artwork. I cha nged nothing whatsoever as it was perfect the way it was. This one was 100% Big P's work. Personally I think it was a beautiful tribute to Curtis that nobody in their right mind could ever find fault with. -- durian1 -------------------------- Curtis Mayfield "Keep On Keepin' On" Live & Studio Rarities Source:"Keep On Keepin' On" Big 'Fro Bootleg (BF-005) Lineage:SBD>CD(Original Silver)>EAC(secure mode/offset correct)>WAV>FLAC(A) "Old Grey Whistle Test" London England, January 1972: 01. I had been listening to Curtis ALOT at th e time since the Curtom label had rereleased a bunch of recordings with bonus track s in 2000 after his death. I had never seen any boots of him, let alone any of thi s quality. I first seeded this show at STG back in the fall of '03 and thinking th at relatively few people were familiar with him, I penned an introduction to persua de downloaders to check him out. Little did I know, there were over a thousand fan s waiting to grab it. Since others who've reseeded the show since have seen fit to reprint my words, I'm including them once more. The man truly inspired me during his lifetime and continues to today. I hope he inspires you all too. "If you haven't heard of Curtis Mayfield, do yourself a favor and give him a listen . If his superlative songwriting skills, smooth guitar licks and sweet falsetto vo cals aren't enough to grab you, consider this; his messages of love, compassion, pe rseverance, and temperance are just as socially and politically relevant today as t hey were during the civil rights movement. Curtis, we miss you." -- bcc32065 (Fall '03) --------------------- Hush now child and don't you cry Your folks might understand you by and by Move on up towards your destination You may find from time to time Complications Bite your lip and take a trip Though there may be wet road ahead You cannot slip So move on up and peace you will find Into the steeple of beautiful people Where there's only one kind So hush now child and don't you cry Your folks might understand you by and by Just move on up and keep on wishing Remember your dreams are your only schemes So keep on pushing Take nothing less - not even second best And do not obey - you must have your say You can past the test Move on up to a greater day With just a little faith if you put your mind to it You can surely do it Just Move on up Move on up Move on up! --------------------- "Now is always the right time, With something positive in your mind, Whenever something pulls you down, Just get back up and hold your ground." --Curtis Mayfield (6/3/42 to 12/26/99)

LDB Master Series #44 Hello, this is a collection of masters I would like to seed here. I've been taping shows for more than 20 years and have an awful lot of masters. Most of them are in the old cassette format, some others are on MiniDisc and others are on CD. I've taped many shows of many artists over the years, so don't be surprised if you will find many different artists taped! Some shows are already circulating, some others have not circulated through collectors y et. But most of all, enjoy! They all come from my mastertapes! Paul McCandless / Enrico Pieranunzi duo Perugia, Galleria Nazionale 12 July 2003 Ajapi Spanish Stairs Unknown Track Luces Xa-na Blue East Serenata Sconosciuta December Lullaby Having seen recently Oregon in concert, I was once again amazed by the incredible P aul McCandless, a true master of reeds. So I thought I would resurrect this nice set I recorded off the radio a while ago, from the 2003 Umbria Jazz festival. A mix of McCandless and Pieranunzi (one of my favourite pianists, I have to say) song s. This is a must have for all Oregon fans but also to all jazz lovers. The sounds is very good indeed. Messiahs Die Young This is easily one of the highest quality bootleg CDs that I've ever come across. I bought thi s CD from a Men Without Hats fansite in the mid-1990s - unfortunately I can't remember the name of the webs ite or the seller, but perhaps other MWoH fans might recall some of these details. The packaging is truly excelle nt (I've included scans of the artwork, but I doubt they do justice to the original) and that plus the combined r arity of the music and the high quality of the sound impressed me greatly. This is what I can remember about the original source recordings: the "ROY" demos were allegedl y taken directly from a demo tape which was shopped around to various record labels in 1980. The 1984 rehearsals wer e supposedly recorded on the very first day that the band gathered for the "FOE3" studio sessions. Not tech nically demos, and not a rough mix of the final versions, but truly something unique that bridged the gap betw een the two. A few of the highlights: - The unreleased tracks "Gravity is My Enemy", "1999", and "Rhythm of Youth" are just as good a s anything on the band's first two records. - An ultra-fast version of "Living in China". - A much faster (and longer) version of "Ban the Game", as it was later performed on the widely -distributed Montreal 1985 video and audio bootleg. - An unreleased instrumental fragment, entitled "Ou Sont Mes Men". The original CD had a bonus track, "Editions of You (Heavy Guitars Mix)" - unfortunately I coul dn't seem to extract it from the CD. Sorry!

Pat Metheny
Pat Metheny - The PMG Companion, Vol. 1 (1976-1980)
Notes:
PAT METHENY GROUP
The PMG Companion, Volume 1 (1976 - 1980)
The PMG Companion series (additional volumes to follow) attempts to gather together the many
compositions the Pat Metheny Group has performed in its history which have not appeared on
commercially available albums by the PMG. Included are unreleased originals, standards and
covers, and PMG treatments of material Metheny has released outside the Group.
Every effort was made to determine which was the best available version of each inclusion.
Most of the choices were "obvious choices." By happy coincidence, many of the Group's best
performances (and a good number of the rarities) happened to have been broadcast on radio or
television. The tracks that are taken from audience recordings are also very listenable. This
compilation is "a work in progress," however, and members of the collecting community are urged
to come forward with 1) source upgrades, 2) any performance by the PMG of a piece that does not
appear here and meets criteria for inclusion, 3) alternate performances that are thought to be
superior to the ones used, 4) information as to titles, dates and locations that are now listed
as "unidentified," and 5) corrections.
Tremendous thanks are due Charles Fredericks for his tireless dedication to presenting the best
possible package. Charles remastered the raw tracks so that the playback volumes were consistent.
He faded applause in and out. He gently and expertly reduced tape hiss. He EQ'ed, when necessary.
In, short, he lovingly polished the diamond in the rough. Also, huge thanks are due Ted Foos,
who graciously gave of his time and talent to the creation of the artwork package for this
volume. It is sincerely hoped that these two friends will again offer their artistry and
expertise to the creation of Volume 2.
Lastly, it would be a great oversight not to thank the many tapers and collectors who have
worked to capture and to share these recordings. They have collectively unlocked, for this
longtime PMG fan and for many others, an only-dreamed-of vault of live performance documents.
There is one person among them I wish to thank by name. He has a heart as big as a house, a true
passion for "all things Metheny," and is one of the world's foremost collectors - Lisardo
Maggipinto. These compilations could not have been assembled (at least, not by me) without his
unending generosity over the years.
We hope you will enjoy and value this addition to your PMG collection, and will seek out
Volume 2 of The PMG Companion series when it becomes available. Please remember that this
compilation is never to be used for personal gain. Any attempts to sell copies via eBay or
other means will be thwarted to the best of the abilities of the international PMG fan
community, to whom this series is humbly dedicated.

Disc 1:
a) Pat Metheny
Personnel:
Pat Metheny: guitar
Lyle Mays: piano
Mike Richmond: bass
Dan Gottlieb: drums
The first five tracks of this compilation are taken from the first show of a two-night stand
at Boston's then-premier jazz venue, the Jazz Workshop, on September 21, 1976. The set was
broadcast by WBCN, Boston's influential progressive rock station, as part of its "Live At The
Jazz Workshop" series.
At the time of the broadcast, Metheny and drummer Dan Gottlieb were members of the Gary Burton
Quartet and were preparing to record "Passengers" with Burton and then to tour. Metheny, with
Burton's blessings and encouragement, had already released his debut as a leader, "Bright Size
Life" (a trio project, with Jaco Pastorius, bass, and Bob Moses, drums), the previous year. And
it was the generous Burton who introduced Metheny to pianist Lyle Mays at the Berklee School of
Music in Boston in 1976, suggesting they might find in each other simpatico musical
sensibilities.
The Jazz Workshop dates were booked as a showcase engagement for then-local favorite (but
quickly emerging phenomenon) Pat Metheny, who would soon gain wider international recognition
and acclaim with the release of "Watercolors," featuring Mays and Gottlieb (along with ECM
label-mate Eberhard Weber on bass). To the best of my knowledge, Metheny, Mays and Gottlieb
had not performed together in public before these Boston shows, nor would they again until they
came together with bassist Mark Egan to form the Pat Metheny Group in the spring of the following
year. Bassist Mike Richmond was a member of Jack DeJohnette's band at the time of the Jazz
Workshop dates, and, like the other players, active at Berklee. With three-fourths of the
original quartet in the group, however, and with the launch of the PMG only months away, it was
impossible not to regard these five tracks as "PMG" performances.
Personnel:
Pat Metheny: guitar
Lyle Mays: piano
Mike Richmond: bass
Dan Gottlieb: drums
01. Bright Size Life (Metheny)
06:04 (Boston, Massachusetts, September 21, 1976)
This performance of the title track from Metheny's debut contains a rare solo by Mays. When the
PMG was formed in early 1977, "Bright Size Life" was used to feature bassist Mark Egan.
02. The Whopper (Metheny)
06:48 (Boston, Massachusetts, September 21, 1976)
This is likely the only PMG version of this seminal Metheny original. A favorite from the
album, it was released in 1977 by the Gary Burton Quartet (featuring Metheny and Gottlieb) on
"Passengers."
03. Nacada (Metheny)
05:00 (Boston, Massachusetts, September 21, 1976)
On stage, Metheny introduced this beautiful composition as his first attempt at writing a jazz
ballad. While later PMG performances would find Mays providing subtle backing on Oberheim
synthesizer, in this early reading he contributes his always-eloquent accompaniment solely on
acoustic piano. Like "The Whopper," this piece was featured on the Gary Burton Quartet's
"Passengers."
04. There Will Never Be Another You (Harry Warren-Mack Gordon)
12:55 (Boston, Massachusetts, September 21, 1976)
To the best of my knowledge, this is the only existing PMG performance of this standard. All the
players know the song well, and it swings. "In the tradition," each musician receives ample solo
space, and each makes great use of it.
05. Unquity Road (Metheny)
06:54 (Boston, Massachusetts, September 21, 1976)
A rare performance of this hard-driving tune from "Bright Size Life," Mays again navigates
previously uncharted waters to deliver an impassioned solo to complement Metheny's. Gottlieb and
Richmond are right there with them, all the way. The track originates from a source inferior to
the one used for the previous four Jazz Workshop tracks - "Unquity Road" was, sadly, incomplete
in the superior source - and an upgrade is sought.
b) Pat Metheny Group (1977 - 1980)
Personnel:
Pat Metheny: guitar
Lyle Mays: piano, keyboards
Mark Egan: bass
Dan Gottlieb: drums
06. Unity Village (Metheny)
06:42 (unidentified location, 1977)
Here is a rare stand-alone performance of this memorable tune from the "Bright Size Life" album,
and - as was the case with the version of "Bright Size Life" heard earlier - it includes an
equally rare solo by Mays. This tune was used almost exclusively during the years of the original
PMG to open a three-part suite. "Unity Village" would dissolve into a solo guitar improvisation,
which would, in turn, segue into a full-band rave-up (usually Keith Jarrett's "The Windup").
Metheny would be the lone soloist on the "Unity Village" portion of the suite, with Mays' feature
reserved for the closer.
07. Missouri Uncompromised (Metheny)
06:16 (Montreal, Quebec, 1977)
This exciting version of yet another tune from "Bright Size Life" is an edit from just such a
"Unity Village" suite (see previous track), where it served as the closer, and as a feature for
the stunning drumming of Gottlieb. (One of the true benefits of hearing live recordings of the
original quartet is the acquiring a deeper understanding of Gottlieb's musicianship and important
contributions to the Group during his tenure.) Note the quote from "House Of The Rising Sun."
The PMG would quote the song again, in grander fashion - along with "Louie Louie" and other rock
and soul favorites - during the "American Garage" era.
08. All The Things You Are (Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein)
03:43 (Montreal, Quebec, 1977)
This standard was performed frequently during the first year of the PMG, and Metheny has
continued to display his affection for it in trio and other outside-the-Group settings in the
years since. In its original incarnation as a stripped-down quartet, the PMG could be more
exploratory (as a unit) in live performance than it had the luxury of being in later years.
Consequently, the Group approached some material, including this tune, from considerably
different angles on different nights. This version presents the standard as a fast-paced Metheny
feature, and I consider this to be the "definitive" PMG performance. A studio version was
released on Metheny's 1990 trio album, "Question And Answer" (Dave Holland, bass, and Roy Haynes,
drums).
09. Unidentified #1
08:24 (Portland, Maine, August 3, 1977)
Is this an original, or is it a swingin' blues from the pen of one of the masters? In that
Metheny does not introduce it as a cover, which he normally does when the PMG play one, my
guess is that it's an original (as much as it can be considered one). Whatever the case, it
further demonstrates the Group's straight-ahead jazz chops, while it retains the unmistakable
stylistic characteristics of these decidedly contemporary musicians.
10. On Green Dolphin Street (Ned Washington-Bronislau Kaper)
06:42 (unidentified location, 1977)
Here's a joyful, hard-chargin' performance of this seldom-played (by the PMG) standard.
11. Unidentified #2
06:36 (Troy, New York, 1977)
This is a slower, funkier blues than the blues of Unidentified #1. Except for that fact, the
above comments regarding Unidentified #1 apply here.
Disc 2:
01. Midwestern Nights Dream (Metheny)
16:14 (Bremen, Germany, March 13, 1978)
This moody, and, yes, dreamy Metheny original from the "Bright Size Life" album had been in the
PMG's set list from the beginning. By the time of this 1978 performance (one of the final
renditions of the piece by the Group), it had evolved into an epic excursion suggesting the
long-form PMG compositions to come. This time the dream takes you to some unexpected musical
landscapes while never losing sight of itself, thanks in large part to Egan's concentration as
"variations on a theme" swirl around him.
02. Wrong Is Right (Gary Burton-Larry Coryell)
05:11 (Bremen, Germany, March 13, 1978)
This pleasing, uptempo nod to mentor Burton had been used as an encore in PMG set lists from
the first, and this mature 1978 performance was judged to be the "definitive" version. Like
"Midwestern Nights Dream," it would soon disappear from the set list to make way for the wealth
of new material generated by the inspired Metheny-Mays composing partnership.
03. Unidentified #3 (version 1)
06:53 (Bremen, Germany, March 13, 1978)
Although no writer is credited above, this memorable Latin-flavored romp is almost certainly a
Metheny original. It was the last song played at the Jazz Workshop show in Boston in 1976, which
was before Metheny and Mays began writing together, and it appeared in many shows during 1977
and 1978. Metheny, to the best of my knowledge, never introduced it as a cover. I consider this
to be the "definitive" performance. A studio version of this tune would have been welcome on
"Watercolors" or "Pat Metheny Group."
04. Unidentified #3 (version 2)
12:49 (unidentified location, 1978)
The same tune, again? Yes, included as an illustration of the exploratory nature of the early
PMG. In this performance - presumably a few months after Bremen, and not long before it, too,
was retired from the set list - we're almost halfway through this reinvention before we
recognize it as one. Even then, the material is approached in a radically different way.
05. O Grande Amor (Antonio Carlos Jobim-Joao Gilberto)
06:35 (unidentified location, 1978)
Like "Unity Village," this classic Brazilian samba was used in the first years of the PMG as
the first piece in a three-part suite, which, in this case, would conclude with "Lakes" from
the "Watercolors" album. Only "O Grande Amor" is included here. The track is faded to end on the
last note Metheny plays prior to beginning his mid-suite solo guitar improvisation.
06. Meantime (Metheny, or Metheny-Mays)
09:19 (Madison, Wisconsin, May 28, 1978)
The theme that opens and closes this mostly-improvised piece surfaced several times in the early
years of the PMG as the energetic closer in the "Unity Village" suite. This recording from the
radio broadcast from Bunky's is the only stand-alone version of which I'm aware. After the
opening theme statement and a stage-setting solo by Gottlieb, the Group heads off into territory
left unexplored in the more "rock-ish" versions heard at the end of the "Unity Village" suite.
07. Unidentified #4
08:58 (Madison, Wisconsin, May 28, 1978)
This is a rarely, or once-played, ballad taken from the radio broadcast from Bunky's, and is
almost certainly a Metheny or Metheny-Mays original. Several tapes of the broadcast exist, but
it was an original 1978 cassette from an anonymous donor that was the only one found to contain
this tune in its entirety, if at all. This lone source, unfortunately, has two damaged sections,
which you will hear. An upgrade is fervently sought. In the set, the tune appeared between
"The Epic" and "Jaco." Please check your copies.
08. Four On Six (Wes Montgomery)
06:53 (rehearsal, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, November 12, 1978)
In this rare rehearsal recording Metheny can be heard teaching "Question And Answer" to the
Group. The other tune Metheny was teaching the Group that day was this Montgomery classic, which
was nailed in this performance. This is the only complete take of either song on the tape, which
contains only a portion of the day's proceedings.
09. Unidentified #5 ("circus music") (Metheny-Mays)
06:19 (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, June 14, 1979)
Metheny introduced this tune by saying it had been written for a soundtrack. (Was the film
released?) Although the piece had no title yet, he said, the Group was referring to it as
"circus music," because the scene for which it was written was set at a circus. It was played
in almost every show in 1979, and this performance, recorded at Stars, was judged to be the
"definitive" version.
Disc 3:
01. Mars (later retitled Close To Home) (Mays)
12:06 (San Francisco, California, February 17, 1979)
The PMG performed this Mays original throughout 1979, with Metheny introducing it as "Mars." It
would then be shelved until 1982, when it would reappear as the long-form composition on the
"Offramp" tour. In this stripped-down (pre-Synclavier and sequencers) version, the sound of
Metheny's electric guitar plays a greater role than it did in 1982. Mays recorded the piece
without Metheny, in shorter form, for his 1986 self-titled debut album.
02. The Magician's Theatre (Metheny-Mays)
09:55 (Hempstead, New York, November 17, 1979)
Metheny introduced this short-lived original, featuring an impressive solo by Gottlieb, as
having been written in tribute to The Magician's Theatre in Tulsa, Oklahoma, one of the Group's
favorite venues to play. This performance was taken from the WLIR broadcast of the Hofstra
University concert.
03. Old Folks (Willard Robinson-Dedette Lee Hill)
09:33 (Hempstead, New York, November 17, 1979)
Also from the WLIR broadcast comes the "definitive" PMG version of this lovely old standard,
which would soon be retired from the once-in-a-while status it enjoyed in the set list. Metheny
released a trio version, with Dave Holland and Roy Haynes, on 1990's "Question And Answer."
04. Autumn Leaves (Joseph Kosma-Johnny Mercer)
08:55 (Rome, Italy, June 10, 1980)
An exciting guitar-and-drums duet segment highlights this performance of another standard in the
Group's repertoire. Like "Old Folks," and others already mentioned, it would soon disappear from
the PMG's set lists in favor of new material. The PMG helps to send it out in grand style here
with a fast-paced performance featuring Metheny.
05. Hermitage (Metheny)
07:13 (Hamburg, Germany, July 8, 1980)
This beauty from Metheny's multi-tracked 1979 solo album, "New Chautauqua," was tailor-made for
a PMG treatment. Here is a rare example, taken from the exceptional concert the Group gave at
Onkel Po's, which was taped for television broadcast.
06. Sirabhorn (Metheny) 10:10 >
07. solo guitar improvisation (Metheny) 02:41 >
08. The Windup (Keith Jarrett) 08:25
(Hamburg, Germany, July 8, 1980)
The Onkel Po's show also gives us a rare PMG performance of "Sirabhorn," another piece from
Metheny's "Bright Size Life" album. Here it served to open one of the PMG's trademark three-part
suites. This time the suite is allowed to play through, so as to present an example of the
suite's flow, and to present a version of Mays' frequent feature, Keith Jarrett's "The Windup."
09. Down Here On The Ground (Wes Montgomery)
07:25 (Hamburg, Germany, July 8, 1980)
This famous ballad by one of Metheny's principle inspirations was performed often in the early
years of the PMG, and at no time better than in this "definitive" rendition at Onkel Po's.
Pat Metheny - The PMG Companion, Vol. 2 (1981-1982)
Notes:
6T METHENY GROUP
The PMG Companion, Vol. II: 1981 1982
The Travels Companion
Welcome to Volume 2 of The PMG Companion, a series of compilations that gather together
the best available versions of the many compositions the Pat Metheny Group has performed
in its history that have not appeared on commercially available albums by the PMG. Included
are unreleased originals, standards and covers, and PMG treatments of material Metheny
has released outside the Group.
For this volume the criteria were expanded to allow for the inclusion of "bonus tracks" -
live versions of songs that do have PMG studio recording counterparts. This approach, if
contrary to the ground rules established for Volume 1, made it possible to compile "The
Travels Companion." When you combine this two-disc set with the live double album Travels
(recorded at various locations in 1982), you have at your fingertips a commercial quality
recording of every piece of music the second lineup of the PMG performed in concert during
its remarkably prolific two-year history.
In the second half of 1980, while the PMG were on a six-month hiatus from touring and in the
process of making a change in personnel, and continuing through 1981 and 1982, a seemingly
endless stream of inspired compositions flowed from the pens of Metheny and his frequent
collaborator, Lyle Mays. Many of these pieces grew out of purposeful experimentation, the
writers having made a conscious decision to push themselves into previously unexplored
areas. Several of the new works were recorded by Metheny and Mays in September of 1980,
with special guest percussionist/vocalist Nana Vasconcelos of Brazil, and released on the
duos pivotal As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls in early 1981. Another albums worth
of new material would appear early in 1982, with the release of the re-formed PMGs landmark
Offramp (recorded in October of 1981 with original member Dan Gottlieb, new member Steve
Rodby on bass, and Vasconcelos, returning as a special guest). Seven more compositions,
recorded after the Offramp sessions, dominated the live Travels album. There were other
songs performed in 1981 and 1982 that went unrecorded until years later, after they had been
revisited and reworked, or that remain unreleased as of this writing. All of those are
included here. The PMG Companion, Vol. 2, along with Methenys groundbreaking double album,
80/81 (recorded in May of 1980, between PMG tours of North America and Europe), Methenys
and Mays As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls, and the PMGs Offramp and Travels albums,
stand together as a testament to the tremendous growth of the composers during this period,
and to a work ethic that, especially in Methenys case, continues to this day.
In much of their adventurous new material, Metheny and Mays were expressing themselves,
sonically, in ways they never had before, as well. This was due to the almost simultaneous
introduction of two revolutionary synthesizers, which the two are credited with having
pioneered in live performance. No one in attendance at a 1981 PMG concert will soon forget
his or her first exposure to the raw, trumpet-like cry of Metheny's new Roland GR-300 guitar
synthesizer, which he would strap on early in the set for the full-throttled frenzy of his
role in the Groups soon-to-be-recorded tribute to Ornette Coleman, Offramp. A few songs
later, Metheny would pick up the Roland again, this time to render, in a far more lyrical
but equally spectacular fashion, a building passion and an exhilarating release that,
heretofore, would have been impossible for him to convey in a like manner, in his and Mays
mesmerizing tour de force Are You Going With Me? (featured on Offramp, and in a live
version on Travels).
Mays, meanwhile, had added the computer-based Synclavier to his growing keyboard arsenal. A
combination digital recording system and synthesizer, with a sampling rate much higher than
the analog synthesizers of the day higher than standard compact discs, in fact - it
provided Mays with the ability to trigger pre-recorded backing tracks, or to synthesize, via
the Synclaviers keyboard, life-like recreations or imaginative permutations of any sound
he and Metheny needed in order to fully realize their visions for their new compositions.
Examples of such sampling choices included individual instruments (for instance, Mays
harmonica solo in Are You Going With Me?), lush beds and orchestrations, and special
effects, such as the circling helicopters, falling projectiles and multi-tracked
manipulations of Vasconelos ethereal voice heard in live versions of As Falls Wichita,
So Falls Wichita Falls (a version is included on Travels) and minus the helicopters
here, in the 1982 arrangement of Mars.
Metheny and Mays employed the new synthesizers judiciously, choosing to expand on the
distinctive stylistic foundation theyd forged in the first incarnation of the PMG. They
also countered their increased use of synthetic sounds with a greater number of organic
ones: percussion, the human voice, and, most notably, the acoustic bass. Methenys and Mays
integration of new instruments and technologies has continued in the years since, but,
thanks to an adherence to their original philosophy, the practice has never altered that
which, elementally, has made the music of the PMG so unmistakably their own.
Before we get to the music, please join me in acknowledging the continued dedication of my
partners in this endeavor, Charles Fredericks and Ted Foos. Charles brought the raw tracks
(a fair number of them from 25-year old cassette tapes) to a state I didn't think possible
when we began this project. Even though many of the tracks were taped using the same
recording equipment from night to night, the physical condition and the audio properties of
each tape and, sometimes, even the sound engineers mixes were, to understate it,
inconsistent from tape to tape. Somehow, using the Travels masters as his guides, Charles
brought all of these tracks into line with one another, so that they now sound "of a piece"
when heard together. Ted was there with us all the way, listening in as the raw tracks were
chosen and then as they underwent transformation. Once we'd reached the point where we could
begin to envision the final product when it was finally decided that the bonus tracks
would be included and the sequencing of the discs was firmly established - Ted began the
process of creating his comprehensive artwork package, which is every bit the worthy
successor to the outstanding package he designed for The PMG Companion, Vol. 1.
The three of us would like to extend a very special thanks to our new friend, Jay Vachon. A
fan of Volume 1, and an audio engineer who specializes in restoration, Jay contacted us late
in the process to offer any technical assistance we might need. Rather than simply achieve
the near-impossible goals we set for him most notably, to find a way to bring down the
overbearing volume level of the acoustic bass in a few of the tracks without disturbing the
volume levels or the tonal qualities of the other instruments Jay kindly put every minute
of every track under his microscope and made additional contributions whenever possible.
Finally, wed like to thank our dear friend of longstanding, fellow PMG fan Claudia Milesky.
Back in 2002, Claudia presented us with a wondrous old shoebox full of 25-year old,
off-brand cassette tapes. Extraordinary examples of not being able to judge books by their
covers, these battered, brittle old tapes were dubs of cassettes recorded by the PMG from
their own soundboard in 1981 and 1982. Charles transferred and then mastered the few
complete shows we found in the box, and they were made available to collectors not long
after the tapes were in our possession. These were the widely circulated 1982 Rochester,
Michigan concert (well represented here) and the early and late 1982 Norman, Oklahoma shows
(also represented here). One of the two cassettes was, sadly, missing from the other shows,
but the uncut or otherwise unflawed performances we were able to cull from the tapes we did
have greatly expanded the universe from which this collection could be compiled. The
significance of Claudias gift to the overall quality of this compilation cannot be
overstated.
All involved hope you will enjoy and value this addition to your PMG library. Please
remember that volumes of The PMG Companion are never to be used for personal gain. Any
attempts to sell copies via eBay or other means will be thwarted to the best of the
abilities of the international PMG fan community, to whom this series is humbly dedicated.

Personnel:
Pat Metheny: Guitars, Guitar Synthesizer, Synclavier Guitar prototype
Lyle Mays: Piano, Synthesizers, Organ, Autoharp, Synclavier
Steve Rodby: Acoustic and Electric Bass
Dan Gottlieb: Drums
Special guest Nana Vasconcelos: Percussion, Voice, Berimbau
Disc 1:
01. Better Days Ahead (early version) (Metheny, or Metheny-Mays)
07:00 (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, March 1, 1981)
Credited solely to Metheny when it finally appeared on the PMGs 1989 album, Letter From
Home, this early draft, performed only in the late-winter and spring of 1981, may have
included compositional input from Mays. Gone from the 1989 studio version and subsequent
live performances was the fanfare-like bridge, which serves, first, as the introduction,
and then reappears mid-song to preface Mays piano solo. Also gone was the delicate
down-tempo section, heard just before the second appearance of the bridge.
Better Days Ahead was the only new song performed in 1981 and 1982 to feature Rodby on
the electric bass. Apart from the contributions of Vasconcelos, in its instrumentation (and,
perhaps, from a compositional standpoint, as well) it is this piece, of the new ones, that
is the most reminiscent of the music of the original PMG. On those nights when it appeared,
Better Days Ahead was played second, after the traditional opener, Phase Dance. Of those
available for inclusion, this - one of its first performances - was judged to be the
definitive version.
02. The Windup (late-1981 arrangement) (Keith Jarrett)
07:43 (Victoria, British Columbia, November 7, 1981)
Although an exciting performance of this early PMG set list staple appeared on Volume 1, the
Groups late-1981 arrangement of The Windup merits inclusion here. Earlier in the year,
performances began with an improvised guitar and percussion duet, which would segue directly
into a full-ensemble statement of Jarretts demanding theme. By November, when the PMG
emerged from studio sessions for the Offramp album to perform shows in northwestern North
America and then Japan, a momentum-building, full-ensemble improvisation had been added to
the introduction, between the guitar/percussion duet and the theme. This performance is one
of the few available to feature the expanded introduction.
It should be noted that The Windup had been used in the first years of the PMG as Mays
piano feature in a three-part suite, linked to Methenys feature (usually Unity Village)
by a solo guitar improvisation. By 1981 the song stood alone, and appeared far earlier in
the set. The Windup was the second selection of the night, after Phase Dance, or the
third, on those occasions in the late-winter and spring of 1981 when the early version of
Better Days Ahead was played.
03. Turnaround (Ornette Coleman)
08:25 (Seattle, Washington, November 9, 1981)
In May of 1980, Metheny recorded a trio version of this straight-ahead Ornette Coleman blues
with Charlie Haden (bass) and Jack DeJohnette (drums) for his fourth Pat Metheny album,
80/81. Although it remained, for the most part, a vehicle for guitar trio when it was added
to the PMGs repertoire in 1981, Mays did contribute acoustic piano to the opening and
closing theme statements.
Rodby was given an extraordinary number of soloing opportunities (by PMG standards) during
the 1981 and 1982 tours, and this performance of Turnaround features the first of a number
of his bass solos to be found in this collection. Of the many versions available for
inclusion, this one was chosen on the merits of Methenys and Rodbys jubilant solos, and
for having the added distinction of being the only performance in which Metheny can be heard
providing the bassist with subtle structural support while he improvises.
Metheny still favors Turnaround in trio and other outside-the-Group settings, sometimes
using it to open concerts. He recorded a second studio version with saxophonist Joshua
Redman, Haden, and drummer Billy Higgins for their 1993 album-length collaboration, Redmans
Wish.
04. Unidentified #6 (incorporating the theme to Au Lait) (Metheny-Mays)
18:05 (Providence, Rhode Island, March 11, 1981)
Although Metheny had already thrilled audiences with his new Roland GR-300 guitar
synthesizer several times by this point in early-1981 concerts, this is the instruments
first appearance here. Mays can also be heard for the first time in this collection and
to very good effect making use of the capabilities of the Synclavier.
How does one begin to describe this wacky, wonderful, shape-shifting monster, certainly one
of the most peculiar long-form compositions in the PMG songbook? In its scope, and in its
attempt to tie together a variety of disparate themes and forms from Metheny blowing over
the insistent swing of a John Lee Hooker-like boogie that morphs into a more straight-ahead
jazz figure anchored by a walking bass line, into a section featuring a march rhythm (not
unlike the one used in Letter From Homes Every Summer Night), into another complete
run-through of the opening movement (this time with Mays as the soloist), into the effective
transition Gottlieb executes with his focused drum solo, into Mays haunting theme to Au
Lait (which would be embellished by Metheny later in the year for the co-written version
found on the Offramp album), into Rodbys pathos-heavy acoustic bass solo (listen, also, for
his humorous nod to Paul Chambers bass line to Miles Davis All Blues just before he
invites the rest of the Group back to the proceedings), and back into the boogie again for
the finale - it is this piece, more than any other, which foreshadows the approach Metheny
and Mays would take when composing their 2005 album-length opus, The Way Up.
Like the early draft of Better Days Ahead, Unidentified #6 was performed only in the
late-winter and spring of 1981.
05. Mas Alla (Beyond) (early version) (Metheny)
08:31 (Rochester, New York, June 26, 1981)
This beautiful ballad wouldnt find its voice - or its title - for a couple of years,
when Pedro Aznar joined the Group. Aznar, from Argentina, would write and sing (angelically)
Spanish lyrics for Methenys melody, and the song in its final form would find just the
right home as Mas Alla (Beyond) on the PMGs 1984 album featuring Aznar, First Circle.
More an effective vocal colorist than an accomplished singer like Aznar, Vasconcelos
struggles with Methenys melody in this early version, for which he wrote lyrics in his
native language, Portuguese. Perhaps due to his inability to fulfill Methenys aspirations
for the piece, this performance is one of only two known attempts during Vasconcelos
two-year stay with the Group. The Roland, the Synclavier, and the berimbau (on which
Vasconcelos mimics wildlife sounds, like those heard the following year in the pastoral
Farmers Trust) figure prominently.
06. (It's Just) Talk (early version) (Metheny)
07:17 (St. Louis, Missouri, July 20, 1982)
Most of the raw ingredients of what would become (Its Just) Talk on the PMGs 1987 album,
Still Life (Talking), are here, but the song wouldnt be finished until Metheny and Mays
were writing the film soundtrack to John Schlesingers political thriller, The Falcon And
The Snowman, and trying to come up with a theme for one of its main characters, Daulton Lee.
(The composers ended up writing another, more appropriate theme for Daulton.) Unlike the
studio recording, which includes a piano solo, Metheny is the lone soloist in performances
of the early version. Vasconcelos is heard on congas, accentuating the tunes Latin flavor.
The early version of (Its Just) Talk appeared occasionally in the summer and fall of
1982. Of the performances available for inclusion, this one was chosen for featuring Methenys
most lyrical improvising, which commences almost immediately and continues for most of the
song.
07. More Kansas City (Metheny)
09:41 (Berkeley, California, July 30, 1982)
Also introduced in the summer of 1982, More Kansas City (sometimes incorrectly identified
on collectors set lists as K.C. Blues) is a swinging tribute to the storied jazz-centric
Missouri city near Methenys hometown of Lees Summit. The young guitarist appeared on many
an accomplished musicians Kansas City bandstand while still in high school, and credits
those experiences with aiding in his rapid development. Like Turnaround, this blues is
primarily a vehicle for guitar trio, with Mays contributing to the opening and closing theme
statements. Again, it features an acoustic bass solo by Rodby with support from Metheny, who
chords softly while the bassist improvises.
More Kansas City was performed sporadically through the end of the 1984 First Circle
tour, after which it disappeared from the Groups set lists. Like the PMGs cover of Keith
Jarretts The Windup and Unidentified #6, it remains unreleased. Metheny did revive the
tune in 1993 for his tour with Joshua Redman, but it did not appear on Wish, their
accompanying commercial release.
08. Six And Eleven (Metheny, or Metheny-Mays)
08:37 (New York, New York, November 24, 1982)
Still another composition that remains unreleased, this exercise in equal parts abandon
and finesse was performed only in October and November of 1982, at the same concerts that
introduced Travels, Extradition, Farmers Trust, Goodbye, The Fields, The Sky and
Straight On Red (all of which - along with Song For Bilbao, introduced earlier in the
year - can be found on Travels). Its a fascinating piece. After the Groups precise
ensemble playing of the tricky theme, Mays lays out while Metheny shreds on the Roland
a la Offramp, with Rodby and Gottlieb providing propulsive rhythmic support. Rodby
eventually falls away, too, leaving Gottliebs muscular drumming to serve as Methenys
lone accompaniment. Towards the end of Methenys solo Rodby returns, and then Mays re-enters
for the second theme statement and his piano solo. One of the most interesting aspects of
the composition is that, while Metheny takes things pretty far outside during his solo,
Mays chooses to play it straight during his turn, revealing the inside characteristics at
the heart of the piece.
The title may be a reference to the traditional broadcast times of local TV newscasts in
U.S.A.cities. At the time the piece was written, Metheny was involved in a romantic
relationship with a reporter for WBZ-TV in Boston, Massachusetts.
Disc 2:
01. Broadway Blues (Ornette Coleman)
07:30 (Rochester, Michigan, July 14, 1982)
Broadway Blues appeared on Methenys 1976 debut, Bright Size Life (with Jaco Pastorius,
bass, and Bob Moses, drums), but it wasnt until 1982 that the PMG performed it on stage.
All of the other songs on Bright Size Life (except Omaha Celebration, which Metheny did
play occasionally as part of an improvised solo guitar medley) had been given the Group
treatment during the years of the original lineup, and performances of each appeared on
Volume 1. In the summer of 1982, Broadway Blues replaced The Windup in the set and was
given a close-to-identical arrangement - introduced, as was The Windup, by an improvised
guitar and percussion duet. Of the versions available for inclusion, this performance
features one of Mays most memorable solo piano improvisations, distinguished by its
inventive variations on Colemans theme.
02. solo Synclavier guitar prototype improvisation (Metheny) 03 :22 >
03. Mars (later retitled Close To Home) (1982 arrangement) (Mays) 12:20
(Norman, Oklahoma, July 22, 1982, late show)
On the summer 1982 tour, As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls, and the stage-setting
solo guitar improvisation that preceded it, were replaced in the set list by this pairing.
Mays Mars was given the full Wichita treatment, going so far into Wichita territory as
to use the same type of swirling, Synclavier-generated chords in its new introduction that
we hear at the end of the studio version of Wichita. Perhaps Mars, written in 1979, was
originally intended to be side two of Methenys and Mays joint studio venture. Even its
title, and the title Close To Home that Mays gave it when he recorded it for his debut
album, can be interpreted to support this theory (if one views Mars as a possible home for
Earths inhabitants, after Earth falls). Connected or not, this poignant reading stands
as the definitive performance of the 1982 Wichita-like arrangement of Mars.
Metheny had begun using the portable, computer-based Synclavier as a mobile recording
studio and composing tool in 1981. From the beginning, he was interested in working with
New England Digital to develop a fret board-controlled system, similar to Mays
keyboard-controlled system, which would allow it to be used in live performance. By the
summer of 1982, New England Digital was sending Metheny prototypes to try out on the road.
The first attempt had no strings - it was played by tapping the neck with both hands, in
the technique popularized by guitarist Stanley Jordan - and it didnt work properly when
Methenys hands were sweating. Subsequent prototypes had strings, but it wasnt until later
in the year, when New England Digital created an interface for the Roland, that the
Synclavier guitar was born. What we hear here is almost certainly one of the prototypes
with strings.
For the summer 1982 concerts, Metheny used the Synclavier guitar prototype to play vibes,
and improvised a lead-in to Mars that was similar in effect to those hed played on
electric guitar as a lead-in to Wichita. By happy coincidence, this exquisite performance
of Mars is prefaced by one of Methenys most melodious improvisations.
Bonus Tracks:
04. James (Metheny-Mays)
08:33 (Burlington, Vermont, March 12, 1981)
What makes this performance of James such a rarity is that, of the many played in 1981
and 1982, this is the only available version to include the Mays-composed introduction that
opens the Offramp studio recording. The introduction serves as the perfect launching pad for
this tribute to the music of James Taylor, and, perhaps due to its inclusion here, this
performance comes closest to capturing the special, relaxed feel of the studio version.
05. Offramp (Metheny-Mays)
08:32 (Rochester, New York, June 26, 1981)
As previously noted in the foreword, Offramp was 1981 audiences first exposure to
Methenys new Roland GR-300 guitar synthesizer. A tribute to Ornette Coleman and the impact
of his revolutionary harmolodic theory, the piece does have an underlying structure that,
among other things, allows the ensemble to start and stop on a dime each time the difficult,
precision-intensive theme rolls around. Mays, by way of the Synclavier, doubles Methenys
Roland during the theme statements, and the two instruments sound so much alike as to be
practically indistinguishable.
While most performances were characterized by Methenys blazing, pedal-to-the-metal Roland
blowouts, this version was chosen for inclusion on the basis of his solo, especially in the
early going, having more of a lyrical quality, with a greater emphasis on phrasing. (Listen
for his short, playful reference to Colemans Broadway Blues.) Another interesting
difference is the almost hesitant way in which the Group coalesces again after Rodbys
free solo, finally playing the first chorus of the closing theme statement in what sounds
like half time. Gottlieb seems to have been particularly moved by this version of Offramp."
This is the only performance of the many available in which he adds an exclamation point
(an extra snare shot) after its dead-stop conclusion.
06. "It's For You" (Metheny-Mays)
07:35 (Rochester, Michigan, July 14, 1982)
Heres the definitive full-Group performance of a fan favorite from Methenys and Mays
As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls. The most notable difference between the
Metheny/Mays/Vasconcelos studio version and the live PMG arrangement - in that Metheny
contributed a bass track to the studio recording - is the always welcome presence of
Gottliebs drumming. Live versions, of course, also featured a satisfying resolution,
whereas the studio version fades while Metheny is still soloing.
The widely circulated Rochester, MI show exhibited the best sound when choosing some of the
raw tracks for this compilation, and, in the case of this tune, Methenys acoustic guitar,
heard in the opening sections, had a fuller, more natural sound than other contenders. This
performance, happily, also features one of Methenys most exhilarating Its For You solo
flights.
07. The Bat part II (Metheny-Mays) 04:08 >
08. solo berimbau improvisation (Vasconcelos) 02 :23 >
09. Ozark (Metheny-Mays) 04:54
(Norman, Oklahoma, July 22, 1982, early show)
Since 1978, a PMG concert wouldnt have been complete without one of their trademark
three-part suites. In 1981 and 1982, The Bat part II (found on Offramp) and Ozark
(found on As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls) were linked by a solo berimbau
improvisation. An instrument of amazing versatility in a masters hands, Vanconcelos
berimbau figured prominently in the studio versions of both pieces.
The Groups re-imagining of a composition Metheny had recorded with Charlie Haden, Jack
DeJohnette and saxophonists Dewey Redman and Michael Brecker for 80/81, The Bat part II,
is a reflective, through-composed piece, and was played virtually the same way every night.
This performance of the suite was chosen on the strength of Vasconcelos berimbau
improvisation and for Mays beautiful piano solo in the rolling Ozark.
10. Jaco (1981-1982 arrangement) (Metheny)
06:01 (Rochester, Michigan, July 14, 1982)
A new arrangement of Jaco made its debut in 1981 and, by the summer of 1982, appeared as
the last song of the set proper, before the encores. It features a faster tempo, altered
instrumentation, a yelping Vasconcelos, a mid-song drums and congas duet, and a new section,
heard before the false ending, that recalls Weather Reports Birdland. Another point of
difference is the absence of a guitar solo. Instead, as befits the songs namesake, Rodby
is the lone soloist, this time on electric bass. Rather than take a decidedly Jaco-like
approach, Rodby plays a string-popping solo on a bass guitar with frets.
This perennial favorite from 1978s eponymous Pat Metheny Group album was retired from PMG
set lists in late 1982 with the introduction of Straight On Red (found on Travels), which
employed the same type of mid-song interlude for drums and percussion.
11. (Cross The) Heartland (Metheny-Mays) 07:29
12. American Garage (Metheny-Mays) 03:37
(Rochester, Michigan, July 14, 1982)
These two favorites from 1979s American Garage album were used as the encores (or, as the
final encores, once Song For Bilbao, found on Travels, was introduced) in 1981 and 1982.
Again, the Rochester, Michigan show provides the definitive performances with which to
close this compilation.

Midnight Oil - 13th April, 1979, Stagedoor Tavern Sydney I don't know the source of this, but the sound quality is very good. I'd even think it might have been a radio broadcast if not for some of the language, which even 2JJ wouldn't have got away with in 1979! It's short, but there's good stuff here. Midnight Oil One For The Homeless Kids Sydney Showgrounds, 2nd April 1991 Good audience recording. The last show before the band took an extended break after several years of non-stop touring and activity. As the title suggests, this was a benefit show for homeless youth. In between "Sell My Soul" and "No Time For Games", a bloke from some homeless help charity came on and spoke for a bit. I've cut that bit out, not because it isn't important, but it's not something I think anyone is really going to want to listen to over and over again. (He was faded out after about ninety seconds on my version anyway.) The version I received also ran fast, as many of these shows seem to do at some time in between being captured on tape and being shared around, so I have speed-corrected it. In keeping with the theme of the show, the Salvation Army Band provide the brass on those tracks where it is needed. Van Morrison
Van Morrison - Pacific High Studios, CA, Sep. 5, 1971, FM
Notes:
Van Morrison recorded live at Pacific High Studios, California, September 5, 1971. Recorded from rebroadcast on KSAN radio, San Francisco, about 1975 on a Teac reel-t o-reel. Digitized and edited in Sound Forge to remove station ID and one rude noise and broken up into tracks. No sound processing done. 01. Into the Mystic 02. I've Been Working 03. Friday's Child 04. Hound Dog 05. Ballerina 06. Tupelo Honey 07. Wild Night 08. Just Like a Woman 09. Moonshine Whiskey 10. Dead or Alive 11. You're My Woman 12. These Dreams (Of You) 13. Domino 14. Call Me Up in Dreamland 15. Blue Monday 16. Bring it On Home to Me 17. Buena Sera Senorina toadboy DaD 2005-07-31 ----------------------------- Every track ends abruptly or fades out, followed by a ~2 second gap. ----------------------------- ljs 54 2005-07-31 Here are the band members and the review of the show from Russell Parkinson. BTW, track 15 is Blue MONEY. Van Morrison: Guitar, Vocals John Platonia: Guitar Jack Schrober (sic): Sax Jeff Labes: Piano David Hayes: Bass Bill Atwood: Winds Dave Shaw: Drums Notes from Russell Parkinson: This Pacific High Studios material has been frequently booted. It is reviewed in fu ll below. The material also appears (in whole or in part) on a number of other boot s, including Fridays Child, I've Been Working, Into the Mystic, Moonshine Whiskey, This is Van Morrison, Desert Land, Van Morrison, Wild Night in California, and the vinyl Van the Man. Check the other Discography entries for additional details on a specific bootleg. On all of these the sound is fine. The Inner Mystic and Moonshine Whiskey have a cr isper sound generally but have some marked tape hiss on the S's. I've Been Working and Wild Night in California don't but the sound is a little less sharp and there i s more background noise/hiss. I can't comment on the sound quality of the other boo ts from this show I have listed. I find the duller sound without the S hiss prefera ble myself but others may not. A tip here for those with The Inner Mystic etc. The worst of the S hiss is only on one channel. The show is in mono so simply tape the better channel using the right sort of stereo/mono cable and you end up with a bett er sound. Review by Russell Parkinson: This show was recorded live in the studio before a small audience. The band is esse ntially the Caledonia Soul Orchestra. This show is probably the most booted recordi ng out there and for good reason. Van is on fire from the very start with a slow bu rning "Into the Mystic" which is in my books, the best version I've heard. A franti c "I've Been Working" is next. Six minutes of pure funk ending with Van whispering "you send me" to a fade out. Awesome and once again, the best version of this song there is. The small audience couldn't have believed their luck to strike Van on thi s sort of form. To reinforce this Van strikes out with a wonderful version of the T hem song "Fridays Child" and follows it up with Elvis Presleys "Hound Dog". Van doe sn't quite bring the sexual innuendo that Elvis does to this song but it rocks and is a lot of fun. Just in case the audience thinks they're at some sort of rock 'n roll show Van slow s the whole thing down with a delicious "Ballerina". This is the definitive version of this great song in my book and even after eight minutes you don't want it to en d. End it does but to ease the pain is a beautiful "Tupelo Honey" to take you away again. By the time the band are harmonizing "she's an angel" over and over again th e eyes are closed and this listener is in heaven. A revved up "Wild Night" is next and then Van floors us all with an intense cover o f Dylan's "Just Like a Woman". Van takes it right down and brings it right up again , improvises lyrics and what results is one of the greatest cover recordings ever. Van even planned to release it commercially in the mid-seventies but it never happe ned. Van changes tempo again and gives us a lively "Moonshine Whiskey" from the "Tu pelo Honey" album. This has more punch than the album version and is another treat in night full of them. Watch them bubbles in the water! A swinging "Dead or Alive" is next. Van and Lonnie Donnegan recently performed this at one of the Brighton sho ws. It's a great old song and suits the mood of the show to a tee. A pretty straigh t forward "You're My Woman" from Tupelo Honey follows before Van rips into an up-te mpo "These Dreams of You". This leads into a trio of tracks from the His Band and t he Street Choir album. "Domino" is the first and the best of these. This song reall y rocks and at the end the tempo gets faster and faster until it reaches a frenzied climax. Again this is probably the best version of this song I've heard. Only the Montreux 1990 performance where Van integrates "The Midnight Hour" is any competiti on. "Call Me Up in Dreamland" and "Blue Money" are fine performances but are essent ially weaker songs and don't reach the heights of "Domino". A bluesy almost honky-tonk "Bring It On Home" is next. Quite different from the slo w soul of the It's Too Late To Stop Now show but still a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyable. Van finishes the show with the old classic "Buena Sera". Jeff Labes adds some delicious piano, everyone has a laugh and a good time and the show is over. W ow! RATING - ESSENTIAL!!!!! Only a couple of minor tracks from Street Choir don't rate as all time classics but they still sound fine. Everything else is great. This real ly should have been released commercially.

Now, thanks to the persistence, dedication and collaboration of VLS ( vanlose stairway) members and friends, this rare show has finally been assembled from the best sources available to us, complete as broadcast on Dutch FM radio. After 20+ years, we are sure fans will agree that it is about time! Better yet, we have also u nearthed the "raw audio source" of that set, taken from the live performance for a TV program called "Wonderland" in Vara Studios, Hilversum, Netherlands. This audio has never before been circulated, and although available only in mono, it will surely del ight the attentive listener.

The ones i used for this complete set was the best i found : The source for the Early show is a "complete" (early and late shows) double CD set i received as a vine c irculating on Vantrade. I first worked on both the early and late shows from this vine, and was ready to upload my torrent, when Nevinsrip uploaded another version of the late show. I downloaded it and found out that, though its sound was rather muffled, it happened to be a better source for a "remaster" ; it probably came through a low number of analog generation, and was "raw" enough, when the vine source suffers from a rather exagerate e qualisation, Van's voice sounding lass natural, somehow into-the-box (this is a personal opinion and you may prefer the "vined" version). So i started again the whole job for the late show, one of the reason wh y it took me such a long time since i promessed it. Thanks to the guys who PMed me many times, and gave m e encouragements ! The title ot this torrent has to be explained. Flawless : None of the version from this shows i ever heared were absolutly clean, i always had to comp lain about many diginoises. I can't be absolutly affirmative but i wouldn't be surprised to find them on the source silver CDs, and further on any version circulating. The late show recently torrented has also big noises in some tracks, resulting in some awfull scratches. As usual, i repaired all the files redrawing some samples at each flaw i could find. 100% hand-made work, no general filter applyed. Complete : For the very first time, you'll find here the real complete early and late shows. I reintroduc ed the "Tupelo Honey" that Van played in the early show. As far as i know, no circulating bootled have it ! This unique track comes from a rare radio broadcast of the early show, recorded on a tape and unearthe d more than 20 years later that was torrented on a defunct tracker about one year ago, thanks to whoever offered it. The sound quality of this track is of course very different from the other ones, but i did my best to correct it so it sounds similar to the rest as close as possible. Upgraded : I performed some correction on this boot in order to enhance its sound quality. I didn't modif y a lot the early show, i just tryed to give it some more "presence". The late show is much more "remaste red" (sorry Bert, i don't know other term to tell it ;-) ). The now usual "before and after" mp3 snippets will let you hear the difference. Another snippet will also let you hear the difference between that version of the late show and the one in the 2 CD set usualy cir culating on Vantrades. I hope nobody will be shocked by this work, though i know that some nitpickers will pretend that working on CDR sourced files, even from a vine, was bullshit, and that i should have prostituate myself in order to obtain the genuine pre-FM reel tapes. I tryed, sir, i tryed. But the radio director told me that he ha d no sexual attraction for the four-eyed freaks. Many thanks to Nevinsrip for his torrent and to Harm for his precious testing work and advices on the sou nd as well as the artwork.

Van Morrison - Best of 2003 (9 discs)
Notes:
Well-here we go again 2003-a strange year in that Van did a lot more one of's than 2004 or 2005 I want to stress again that if you're looking only for the hits-you're in the wrong place!!!!! My picks for this series are at best subjective and reflect my personal preferences in Van's catalogue. Most of them are either one of's or what I feel are outstanding renditions of classics. They usually are picked from when Van was on and "Into The Music". I have noticed as I have done these Best Of's that in general when he has breaks between gigs he gives more inspired performances. Whether it is because he is better rested-I can only speculate. Venue also plays a part. He seems to like certain locations and crowds and it is reflected in his setlist and performance. Also when he has guests he seems to perform better-maybe peer pressure?? This set will probably be 8 or 9 volumes-not sure yet!!! Artwork Included-Again many thanks to Harm Bengen!!!! I am continuing with my comments on each volume as most people seem to appreciate my biased opinions. To burn to audio-extract files or not depending on burning program-then make audio with NO!!!!!!!!!!! pause between tracks. These Volumes are normalized and blended and are one seamless concert as best as could be done!!!!!!! Comments Welcomed!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!
Disc 1
Notes:
This set is mostly made up of Cardiff and Cheltenham at the start of 2003 when he seemed to be fresh and ready for the grind of touring. He was talking to the audience and his voice in fine form and the setlists were varied as well. So Complicated-done 4 times Too long In Exile-done 7 times-but not since 1993 in my collection and not since She Gives Me Religion-done only 2 times-and one of my favorites Vanlose-done 5 times and with the Kilroy ending-maybe he was taking some Railway Carraige Charms!!!!! What Would I Do-done 4 times-great version Sitting On Top-done 1 time-it is April and he has already got impatient-hear start-with Farlowe-and they segue briefly to My Girl and Reet Petite-strange!!! I Forgot-it is now May and in Berlin-done 1 time-another of my favorites On to Cheltenham-and back to the start of the year Jump, Jive-not one of my favorites and done many times-but this version swings with Sam Butera-peer pressure??? Automobile Blues-done 1 time and the only time he has ever done it- originally done by Texan Lightnin' Hopkins back in the late 50's-I have his version and Van's is better!!!-when Van does the blues he is right up there with Eric Burdon in doi ng whiteman blues She Gives Me Religion-done again!!!!!-remember-"It's My Party" thanks Lesley!!!! Dirty Old Town-done 1 time and the only time he has ever done it-by Ewan Mac Coll-I don't have his version to compare it to-but a great song Fever-done 1 time-he used to segue Moondance to Fever in the 90's -with Sam Butera-no it's not Peggy!!!!! Foggy Mountain-done many times-but another of my favorites Evening Shadows-done 3 times-originally an Acker Bilk instrumental from the 60's which Van has put lyrics to-great song- but here to show Van's arrogance-it starts off with Van asking for requests-the usual Vanlose-Gloria-Brown Eyed-etc are yelled out and then he plays Evening Shadows-Marvelous!!!!!!! Did Ye-we close with this-again one of my favorites-I think when he includes this in his setlist he is feeling the music and usually it will or has been a good concert-he even asks the audience to join in-Dynamite!!!!!! Soon-More to Come
Disc 2
Notes:
This again features 2 venues-Antwerp, Belgium and Madrid, Spain Van's setlist is varied and he seems to be enjoying himself First night in Antwerp-great setlist Down The Road-done 3 times Steal My Heart-done many times-one of my favorites Ballerina-done 1 time and not since 1998-beautiful Solid Ground-done 6 times-it must be St Pat's Day Raglan Road-done 2 times and not since 1999 Star-done 2 times Second night in Antwerp-another great setlist Sweet Thing-done 5 times and most will show up on 2003-one of my real favorites Outskirts-done 1 time-I said he could do whiteman blues!!!! Back to Oxford in January You Don't Know Me-done 1 time-a standard done by Ray Charles among others And now still in January we are off to Madrid, Spain Fire In-surprisingly only done 3 times Georgia-done 6 times-another one Ray Charles made famous Sweet Thing-Again??????????-I said it was one of my favorites and listen to the OLE!!!! about 2.20 in When The Leaves-done 7 times-one of the 2 best from Back On Top In The Afternoon-done many times-but this time Van actually listened to the audience-listen to start-Amazing!!!!!!!+ you get Meditation-Level 2 which makes you sleepy!!!!!!!!!!! Buona Sera-from Udine, Italy-not a great recording but only done 1 time and not since 1999-in the 90's he did some great versions with Georgie Fame-check them out!!!!
Van Morrison, Best of 2005 (6 discs)
Notes:
Van Morrison The Best Of 2005 Many people complain about Van nowadays-myself included but there are times when he doesn't just mail in his performance. This compilation will be all about the times he is on. These nuggets are not necessarily the best recorded versions and in general are all from audience recordings. We then follow with a variety of shows-all of which contain his best performances of the song in this year. Most of them he did infrequently in 2005. A lot of the purists may not be happy with this bastardization of Van's shows of 2005 but my feeling is that Van's shows of the last few years have lacked a lot. sometimes he just goes through the motions for the whole show. Other times glimpses of brilliance are shown and very rarely is a whole show remarkable. I consider myself a purist also and I collect all his shows-Not just FM or soundboard I think these shows are vastly over rated because the sound may be dead on-but if "He's Not Feeling It Anymore-I'm Just Giving You The Score then what is the sense to listen to him go through the motions. I can only lsten to Whinin' Boy Moan and Brown Eyed Girl so often. Harm Bengen who I think has every Van show ever recorded who I consider the ultimate Van fanatic and who will eventually be suppling the artwork for us has told me that he normally doesn't collect compilations but he has enjoyed this series as it almost sounds like a show of it's own. Anyways to each his own. I retired a year ago at 55 and this has given me the time to pursue such labors of love. I used to make custom CD's professionally but I no longer do it as it was just work to me-while I really enjoy doing this.Anyways we end this series with The Way Young Lovers Do-A song that meant a lot to me back in 68 and end it with 2 versions of Celtic New Year-the best song to come out in 2005. Enjoy!!!!!!!!! and if you like it "Please Do Let Me Know" I'm sure they will be great driving in the car CD's and at the very least will make great beer bottle coasters!!!! I may undertake 2004 if enough people want it. This was an experiment to see how it was received among the Van community. I may continue my Through The Years compilations but on the earlier albums there are sometimes no good quality recordings around and some songs have no live versions at all. 01-The Way Young Lovers Do-2005-11-10-Glasgow-Scotland 02-Dead Or Alive-2005-10-30-Newry-Northern Ireland-Early 03-Did Ye Get Healed-2005-11-05-Gloucester-England 04-Raincheck-2005-11-09-Edinburgh-Scotland 05-Stranded-Don't Look Back-2005-11-18-Reading-England 06-Carrying A Torch-2005-12-02-Middlesbrough-England 07-Foggy Mountain Top-T For Texas-2005-12-13-Brecon-Wales 08-Georgia On My Mind-2005-11-04-Salisbury-England 09-Muleskinner Blues-2005-10-29-London-England-Early 10-Philosopher's Stone-2005-10-29-London-England-Late 11-Celtic New Year-The Healing Game-2005-10-29-London-England-Late 12-Celtic New Year-The Healing Game-2005-11-17-Portsmouth-England
