Robert Earl Keen
"Among the large contingent of talented songwriters who emerged in Texas in the 1980s and 1990s, Robert Earl Keen struck an unusual balance between sensitive story-portraits ("Corpus Christi Bay") and raucous barroom fun ("That Buckin' Song"). These two song types in Keen's output were unified by a mordant sense of humor that strongly influenced the early practitioners of what would become known as alternative country music. Keen, the son of an oil executive father and an attorney mother, was a native of Houston. His parents enjoyed both folk and country music, and his own style would land, like that of his close contemporary Nanci Griffith, between those genres. Keen wrote poetry while he was in high school, but it wasn't until he went to journalism school at musically fertile Texas A&M that he learned to play the guitar. He and Lyle Lovett became friends and co-wrote a song, "This Old Porch," which both later recorded.
Keen made a splash in Austin with his debut album, No Kinda Dancer, self-financed in 1984 to the tune of 4,500 dollars. He moved to Nashville during the heady experimentalism of the 1980s that saw Lovett and k.d. lang hit the country Top Ten, but he soon returned to Austin. Texas landscapes and residents provided Keen with creative inspiration, as his second album, West Textures, made clear; that album yielded one of Keen's signature numbers, an ambitious crime-spree song called "The Road Goes on Forever." Now recording for Sugar Hill, Keen recorded a live album shortly after West Textures but waited several years to release a studio follow-up, 1993's A Bigger Piece of Sky. After that album (which contained "Corpus Christi Bay") came Gringo Honeymoon (1994), which merged Keen's story songs with the emerging sounds of alt-country: guitars were laid down by the influential Austin musician Gurf Morlix, who later produced albums for both Keen and Lucinda Williams, and a young Gillian Welch provided harmony vocals.
Once again, after taking his career to a new stage, Keen recorded a live album (No. 2 Live Dinner, 1996) and took time to accumulate new material. The 1997 album Picnic, his first for the Arista Texas label, again moved in the direction of alternative country, featuring Keen in a duet with the Cowboy Junkies' Margo Timmins, while 1998's Walking Distance featured sparer textures. Whatever production style surrounded his songs, Keen's musical personality seemed consistent, and his live shows, widely known thanks to a touring schedule that often approached 200 dates a year in the 1990s, grew organically in depth and control. In the early 2000s, Keen signed with the Lost Highway label and released the album Gravitational Forces (2001). He also devoted time to his influential annual concert series and talent festival, Texas Uprising, which took place at several venues around Texas and the Far West. 2003 saw the release of his eighth studio album, the amiable Farm Fresh Onions, as well as The Party Never Ends: Songs You Know from the Times You Can't Remember, a compilation of Keen's Sugar Hill days. His next release was 2005's What I Really Mean for the Koch label. It was followed in 2006 by Live at the Ryman." - James Manheim

Angelique Kidjo
"Afro-funk, reggae, samba, salsa, gospel, jazz, Zairean rumba, zouk and makossa are combined through the music of soulful, Benin-born and Paris-based, vocalist, Angelique Kidjo. Since the release of her self-produced, debut, solo album, Pretty, in 1988, Kidjo has been embraced by the international press. "The New York Times", hailed her for "growls and swoops that link African tradition to American soul music", while, iMagazine claimed, "There has rarely been an African diva of such wholesomeness and fertility to the power and intoxication of Angelique Kidjo."
Kidjo's albums have been strengthened by contributions from top-notch guest musicians and producers. Parakou, her first internationally-distributed album, featured jazz keyboardist Jasper Van't Hof, the leader of Pili Pili, a Holland-based Afro-jazz band with whom Kidjo had performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1987. Logozo, recorded in Miami in 1991 and produced by Joe Galdo of the Miami Sound Machine, featured Branford Marsalis on saxophone. Marsalis later performed on Kidjo's album, Oremi. Released in, the album featrued Kidjo singing duets with Cassandra Wilson ("Never Know") and Kelly Price ("Open Your Eyes"). Kidjo's most ambitious album, Fifa (1996), featured more than one hundred percussionists, flautists, cowbell and berimbau players, singers and dancers from Benin and one track featuring Carlos Santana. Kidjo's husband, Jean Hebrail, a French bass player and composer she met in 1987, has played a major role in the recording of her albums.
The daughter of an actress, dancer and theatrical producer, Kidjo was born in Quidah, a coastal city in the West African country of Benin. Inheriting her mother's love of performing, she made her stage debut with her mother's theatrical troupe.
Inspired by the rock, pop and soul music of Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Miriam Makeba, James Brown and Aretha Franklin, she was singing professional by her twentieth birthday. Although she recorded an album, Pretty, produced by Cameroun-based vocalist Ekambi Brilliant, that yielded a hit single, "Ninive," the oppressive political environment of Benin led her to relocate to Paris in 1980. Although modern technology and electronics played an important role in the recording of her first four albums, Kidjo returned to her traditional roots with Fifa. Armed with eight track tape recorders and microphones, Kidjo and a team of engineers traveled to Benin to record traditional musicians, singers and dancers. The album was completed during recording sessions in Paris, London, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
With her next album, 1998's Oremi, Kidjo returned to her futuristic approach. Incorporating elements of hip hop and Afro-Celtic grooves, Oremi featured a reconstructed interpretation of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)." Kidjo explained her refusal to be limited to her native music in an article featured in "World Music: The Rough Guide." "I won't do my music different to please some people. I'm not going to play traditional drums and dress like bush people. I don't tell Americans to play country music."
Kidjo's enthusiastic presence was evident on the video of her international hit, "Agolo," from her album, Aye (1994). Produced by Will Mowatt of Soul II Soul and long-time Prince collaborator David Z, the video was nominated for a Grammy award. Kidjo's songs have been featured on the soundtracks of such films as My Favorite Season, Street Fighter and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. As the new millennium got underway, Kidjo signed to Columbia and prepped for her major label debut. Exploring musical elements of her native Benin to that of the Northeastern Brazil, Black Ivory Soul was released in 2002. Oyaya!, which featured a collaboration with Dave Matthews, was issued two years later." - Craig Harris

Will Kimbrough
"Best-known as a name in the CD liner notes of some of the hippest country and rock artists of the '90s and 2000s, both Will Kimbrough's solo and his band work have been championed by critics on both sides of the ocean. Kimbrough first came to the attention of the industry as frontman for Will & the Bushmen, a popular college rock band formed in the unlikely locale of Mobile, AL. The Bushmen pounded out a reputation on the Southeastern frat-party circuit, releasing the self-produced Gawk in 1985. The band was signed to SBK Records on the strength of their popular live show, releasing the self-titled Will & the Bushmen album in 1989. The band moved to Nashville to record their third album, Blunderbuss, released in 1991. The album yielded a minor hit, but the band broke up in the aftermath of SBK's bankruptcy.
Kimbrough formed the Bis-Quits with friends Tommy Womack (Government Cheese) and Mike Grimes (Bare Jr.), the band releasing a self-titled collection of whip-smart roots rock in 1993 for John Prine's indie Oh Boy Records. On the strength of his vastly underrated guitar skills, Kimbrough embarked on a career as an in-demand session player and touring musician, working with artists like Kim Richey, Todd Snider, Rodney Crowell, Steve Forbert, and Amy Rigby. Kimbrough recorded his first solo album in 2000, a collection of shimmering pop-flavored rock titled This, released on his own Waxy Silver Records. Later that year, Kimbrough reissued the Bushmen's Gawk on CD for the first time. In between the demands of session and road work, Kimbrough found time to record his second album, Home Away, released on Waxy Silver in 2002. A gifted songwriter and talented musician influenced by giants like John Lennon and Alex Chilton, Kimbrough would be a most valuable player on anyone's team. In 2006, Americanitis, a protest/patriotic record, came out." - Rev. Keith A. Gordon

Knitters - Eye Magazine Benefit, Hollywood, CA, Jul. 26, 1983
Notes:
The Knitters Exene Cervenka Jon Doe Dave Alvin Cathay DeGrande Eye Magazine Benefit (2nd Live Performance) Hollywood, CA Los Angeles, CA 19830726 Taped: 1st or 2nd Gen Transferred SxPxDxCx Source: Unknown Cassette Recorder by Ken Spears > 1st gen cassette Transfer: cassette > Cooledit > CDWave > FLAC As memory serves me, this is the 2nd ever Knitters live performance; the first being as an opener for John Cale at the Country Club in Reseda in the weeks prior. This is the origi nal lineup with just Exene, Jon and Dave. The show was part of a benefit concert for a pe riodical I published with my friend Kathy Georges. We published The Eye Magazine out of O range County, CA from July 1982-July 1983. The show came about one night at the Club Ling erie where the Minutemen and Rank and File were playing. The exact details are hazy, but I think I was talking with Dave Alvin and he told me about the new group he was doing with Jon and Exene that was a play on the Weavers; Kathy and I were both talking with Chip and Tony from Rank and File and they agreed to play a benefit for our fledgling publication. Los Lobos was releasing their first EP and they shared ma nagers at that time with Rank and File and they wanted to do it too. (X, Los Lobos and Ra nk and File were part of the Slash record community with X leaving after their second LP.) We both knew Pleasant Gehman as she was booking the Cathay at that time, and she was start ing an all-girl country band with Rosie Flores called the Screaming<92> Sirens. She booke d our show at the Cathay if the Sirens could play too! Hence, a show was born with this lineup: Knitters Los Lobos Screaming Sirens Rank and File The set is incredible; a few made it on to the Knitters debut LP; however the rest of the set that is extremely noteworthy. X had released Under The Big Black Sun late in 82. <93>The New World<94> and <93>I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts<94> had not yet appeared on a record. There is a <93>concept<94> medley with Jon Doe alternating verses of George Jones <92> <93>Wild Side of Life<94> with Exene responding with verses of <93>It Wasn<92>t God W ho Made Honky Tonk Angels<94> made popular by Kitty Wells. Jon sings X<92> The Have Nots and Dave<92>s Long White Cadillac (which I believe had just been released on The Blasters <92> Non Fiction LP). The recording is good, not great, but very listenable. I believe the taper was Ken Spear s or Dr. Weed (KUCI DJ and 80s friend). If either of you are out there somewhere, please PM me! Special thanks to James Freeman (ZekeRnR) for transferring the cassette to flacs an d his patience with assisting me with uploading! James loved the recording for its intimac y, complete with laughs, beer bottles, etc. So, sit back and enjoy this piece of musical history listening to one of today<92>s <93>su pergroups<94> in its infancy! 01. For us lucky SF Bay Area people, she chose this small intimate venue to rehearse and also to debut work in progress material, some of which would eventually end up on her last release, The Girl In The Other Room. Tickets for all the shows went on sale at the same time and I was extremely lucky to have been able to score a pair, and all shows sold out virtually instantly. Net traffic was horrid as by the time I had scored a pair I was not able to try to get another for a separate show. Apparently no other tapers I knew of hit these 10, or perhaps their keeping onto their mas ters. Here's hoping that my release of this will in turn do good karma and set off the release of others, or just some good ol' DK material in any shape or form. Enjoy! SOME RULES: ===The taper kindly asks you NOT to convert to mp3 for distribution, keep them on your own iPODs Zunes etc.=== ===No ebay, no silver cd pressing for sale, and absolutely no asshats allowed!===
