Minor track editing with Sound Forge 4.5

I have no knowledge about who made this audience recording. Actually, I acquired each half of the concert through two dif
ferent trades with Joe Jackson and Todd Rundgren fans. It is possible that the source data is different for each disc. M
issing here is a recording of the opening set by Ethel. In any case, the sound quality is fine. The entire concert was a
lso professionally videotaped. A potential DVD release someday, Todd? Joe?

From Jon:

Some of you may remember that in September 2003, I finished and distributed an 18 dis
c set of live Joe Jackson material. Since then, I've improved my "studio" quite a bit
and also have unearthed a few more recordings. There's also been two more tours.

I was recently listening to those discs and decided they don't really sound all that
great. So I decided to "remaster" all of them and recreate some of them. I think they
sound much better. And they are more complete.

As to why I ever did this:

1. I love raw live recordings.
2. I wanted just one disc from every tour instead of 10 of each in which the differen
ce between the discs was one song.
3. My fanship of JJ is based largely on his constant innovation and reinterpretation
of his own (and others) music. This set reflects that.

With special thanks to Jeff, Bjoern, John N., Gert, Maura, Carol, Bladerunner and esp
ecially Phillip (hope I didn't forget anyone), I was able to accumulate enough differ
ent shows from every tour that I think I had at least one version of every song playe
d.

From there, I took the best sounding version of each song and created a master list.
From the master list, I took as many songs as I could fit on an 80 minute disc, in or
der of songs I most wanted to have from each tour. Then, using Sound Forge, I blended
all of the songs together so that they sound like one show with no breaks of silence
, and remastered each song as
best as I could (not everything was salvageable - like "Moonlight" from 1983 - but I
put it on anyway because I like the song so much) and balanced the sound levels.

I hope you will find it all worth it. It took me about two months to complete the ori
ginal set and a month to complete this one, but I am very happy with the finished pro
duct. Now if only the record companies could have done this for me...

As always, these are not for sale - either by me or anyone who receives one. These ar
e strictly for trade and personal enjoyment. I do not take it for granted the legal q
uestions surrounding this and ask that everyone be respectful of JJ and his managemen
t and thankful that they allowed me to share this the first time (and presumably this
 time, as well).

Some background from the compiler:

"As most of you may remember (or own), I created an 18 disc compilation of every song played by Joe Jackson from every
tour upon which he has ever embarked (so long as there was a audience or soundboard recording of it somewhere)."

(With this 2005 edition, the collection has grown to 20 discs.)

"Thanks in large part to the JJ Archive site, I made a list of every tour and then every song played within each tour (
to the best of our known ability). I then worked to gather at least one version of every song played during each tour.
These songs came through concert recordings gathered by various traders within our JJ community.

"Once gathered, I took what I thought was the best version (usually best sounding, but sometimes most unique, best pian
o solo or weird/funny occurrences) and made one "show" out of all of the songs, trying my best to maintain the order in
which the songs were played. I used editing software to blend the songs to make it as if they were played in the same
place, one right after the other.

"I did this because I had so many shows from each tour that I never knew which one to listen to. Often, there would onl
y be one or two songs on one recording I would like to hear, and several songs on another recording that I didn't want
to hear again.

"Thanks to all those who recorded and shared. I hope this gets to all who desire it."

Another Decade for Tull.

Jethro Tull has always been thought of as a quintessential 1970s English progressiv
e rock band. After the successes of the late 1970s albums
Songs from the Wood and Heavy Horses Tull ended the decade with Stormwatch going Gol
d in the US. But the 1980s would see a new direction for
Ian Anderson and the rest of the gang. For the next album, A, released in 1980, pre
vious band members Barrie Barlow, John Glascock, John Evans and
David Palmer were replaced by Dave Pegg and Mark Craney. Eddie Jobson, having just l
eft the band U.K. was also brought in to provide both keyboard
and violin. Sadly, despite the new look and sound, the A album spent just 5 weeks on
the charts reaching only #25 in the rankings. Broadsword and
the Beast was next and was received well by fans. Sold out venues during the tour fo
r that album provided encouragement but did not translate into
the expected commercial success. Sales in Europe were strong but the Americans did n
ot take to the new offering as much as previous albums. Still, Ian
Anderson was pleased with the work describing Broadsword as one of his favorite albu
ms. This was the first Tull album for yet another new keyboard
player Peter-John Vettese who replaced Jobson after just one album. Vettese actually
contributed much to the new Tull sound and helped with many of
the instrumental sections of the new album.
In 1983 Ian Anderson decided to produce a solo album called Walk into the Light. Fo
r this album, Anderson decided to include Peter-John
Vettese as the only other musician. Though not a great commercial success, the album
was an opportunity for Vettese and Anderson to gain more
experience working together to produce a unified sound. By 1984, Ian and Peter-John
were ready to re-join Martin Barre and the rest of Tull for the next
Jethro Tull album, Under Wraps. When asked about these two albums and the new Jethro
Tull sound, Anderson had this to say, I wanted to take the
opportunity to experiment with something outside the Jethro Tull music of the time.I
wanted to get away from doing what I was known for, and do
something more electronic. It was the beginning of the techno age, of sequencers and
samplers, and it all seemed very exciting.I was interested in the
idea of combining the songs that could have been Tull songs, with a more mechanical
and disciplined arrangement that would come from computer
driven music. It (Walk into the Light) was in a way a direct precursor of the Tull a
lbum Under Wraps. It is interesting that both albums were resoundingly
unsuccessful commerciallyas that marked a rather more experimental period with tech
nology They even used a drum machine instead of a live
drummer for this new Tull album.
At the time, according to Tull fanzine editor David Rees, Under Wraps split the Tul
l fans right down the middle. Some appreciated the new
sound and the contributions of Vettese while others longed for the old style of the
1970s. The members of the band seemed surprised as they rather liked
the result of their latest effort. Martin Barre was quoted as saying, ..It was a lot
of fun to record. More than any of the other albums we had made, it
seemed to be trouble free. Its one of my personal favorite Tull albums. Ian seemed to
agree, nowadays, it is one of the few Tull albums that I play
to enjoy rather than for reference.Under Wraps is a great album
Under Wraps was released in September of 1984, at the beginning of a new tour and d
id eventually rise to number 18 on the U.K. album charts.
For the tour, Doane Perry was asked to play drums and has remained with Jethro Tull
for the past 20 years. The band played 30 shows in Europe (in just 38
days) before beginning the American tour in New Haven Connecticut on October 12th. T
he show presented here is from Providence, Rhode Island 2 weeks
later, October 27th. The set list includes one song from Broadsword and the Beast,
one song from the Anderson solo album (Fly by Night), three from
Under Wraps and the rest from the tried and true earlier Tull albums. Sadly, by this
point in his career, Ian Anderson was beginning to feel the strain of his
demanding performance schedule, or at least his vocal cords were. After completing t
he American leg, the band headed for Australia but by this time
Ian was advised to cancel the tour and rest his voice completely. The last show was
December 18th in Melbourne. Jethro Tull only performed once in 1985,
at a celebration of Bachs 300th birthday on March 16th in Berlin, they would not pe
rform again until June of 1986. Fortunately for us, the fans of Jethro
Tull, the forced sabbatical seemed to help the ailing Anderson as we are now in the
21st century and Tull are still going strong with energetic performances
. The future was shaky back in 1984 but in retrospect it was probably a good decisio
n that in the year 1985, Ian Anderson was kept Under Wraps.

Notes from the Re-Master

This show comes to us from our great New England source. After recording live shows
for close to 10 years he was a master at this craft in 1984
when this show took place. We were sent a CD of the master tape for the project whic
h was used to complete the remaster project. This remaster was
then reviewed by the PRRP staff as well as the taper. A significant speed error was
detected during the remaster process and the taper thought it might
be due to the playback/digitizing process so another digitizing of the master tape w
as made. This was sent on a DVD disc in 32-bit 48 KHz sampling
format as data WAV files. A second remaster of the show using this second source was
then completed. The complete show is here with the one tape flip
filled in with material found elsewhere in the show.
It is easiest to quote the taper at this point as he comments on the venue and the
equipment used to capture the show:

.One thing that occurs to me is that this show owes much of its quality to the acous
tics in theProvidence Civic Center, my favorite of all the hockey
rinks. To the best of my knowledge, the correct lineage for this show is:

Sony ECM-150T > Sony WM-D6C >MaxellXL II-S>Nakamichi Dragon > RDL FP-UBC6 > MOTU 896
 > Wave (48/32) > Cool Edit Pro > Wave(44.1/16)
The ECM-150Ts areomni-directional lavalier condensermics. They contain the same caps
ules as the original Oades and Core Sounds. I had them taped to
my glasses, angled slightly outward according to how close we were to the stacks. Yo
u can hear the stereo image shifting around as I moved my head,
unfortunately much more than I would have liked. It's not easy to hold perfectly sti
ll at aJethro Tullconcert. Try it sometime. The RDL FP-UBC6 is a
professional-quality unbalanced to balanced line-level converter. The MOTU 896 is a
rack-mountable 96Khz Fire Wire audio device.
As with all the shows we have received from this taper, the quality of the recordin
g is just outstanding with harmonics seen in the frequency
spectrum up to 18,000Hz. The venue acoustics were wonderful. There was no booming ec
ho or annoying reflections. Since the show was captured on
two different cassette tapes, our taper provided three files in WAV data format: tap
e 1 side A, tape 1 side B and tape 2.
As above, the first effort for this remaster project was a 16-bit source of the mas
ter. The project was completed and then started all over again
with the new digitized version of the master tapes in 32-bit / 48 KHz format. The wh
ole remaster project was kept in this high-resolution format until the
end when the final step, converting to 16-bit, 44.1 KHz audio format, was made.
The first identified problem with the source material was the tonality. The bass wa
s quite deficient and the high-midrange and treble were
excessive. Once corrected, it was then obvious that the balance was off and needed a
djustment. Working through the show is was quite apparent that
audience noise was a major obstacle. Our poor taper had seated himself near a rather
enthusiastic female Tull fan who yelled frequently throughout the
show. Fortunately, she would always yell at the same frequency so we were able to re
duce her contribution to the recording. The tape flip provided a bit
of a challenge as it occurred at the beginning of a song. Fortunately segments of th
e recording were used to construct the missing pieces so a seamless
segment could be pasted into the gap. Dynamics were adjusted to highlight the dramat
ic character of the Tull show as well.
The final big issue is the speed of the recording. Most disc 1 material was found t
o be at the correct speed and pitch when compared to studio
standards. A segment of the disc 2 material was found to be particularly fast so spe
ed correction was employed. Given the character of the speed
problem, both constant and variable speed correction was used. The result was compar
ed to other live recordings of Tull during the 1984 tour and found
to be similar. Tracking the show was straightforward but we did decide to track the
individual segments of the medley since reference sources for the
setlist of the show do mention these segments separately.

This one is for idj2 for in appreciation for
re-seeding his great EJ April 2006 Denver show.

This is a nice-sounding show, a
s the "Bristol Shore" and "Trademark" samples show. Stevie Ray Vaughan plays on the
encore, "Manic Depression." The sound quality on this encore is not as sharp as th
e other 10 tracks, as you'll see in the "Manic SRV" sample. This is one of the few
times the two Texas guitar giants were taped playing together.

Eric Johnson on g
uitar and voice, Rob Alexander on bass and voice, Steve ? on drums.

Yes, this is not a typo, it's a very rare
gig featuring Eric Johnson playing with Double Trouble: Tommy Shannon on bass and Ch
ris Layton on drums. This is a smokin' show featuring mainly Hendrix and Cream covers
, with a couple of Eric's songs thrown in. The quality is EX. The taper has imbibed a
few, doesn't stand still, and moves around a lot, but the quality remains very nice
indeed. I got this from Panhandle Slim, who remastered it. Malford Milligan from Stor
yville guests on vocals on Tracks 7 & 8. Song samples provided. Posted by Mesquite 8/

Although I know the great album "Outback" came out this year, I am not very familiar
with Elvin's albums, so I'm gonna need some extra help with this set. I'm sure the di
me gallery will be educating as usual. The sound is in fine shape here but this recor
ding could use some editing to cut out some dead air etc...

Note: At the end of disc one, the mix of the applause is super quiet & then there is
a station ID. After some what seems like dead air, Elvin announces that "Ken Kesey is
wanted at the ticket booth" He sounds serious. Classic!

Prof Says:

The announcer remarked that this portion is all that's left in the
VPRO archives from these original recordings, and so that the
rest got lost. Shame...

It has the exact same content as the bootleg 'Summertime'.
I don't know how that boot sounds, but chances are fair that this
is an upgrade in SQ. And even if it's not, then this one at least
has a complete line-age.

Sadly, I had to leave off the track "Maybe" as it has been released
on the official "Box of Pearls" 5CD set.

Enjoy!

The original master recording is still available there : http://www.dimeadozen.org/t

Remaster work on this one mainly consisted in cleaning the surface noises and statics
that were all over the recording, correcting the speed which was slightly too fast a
nd fixing some volume fluctuations. I think this new version is a real improvement so
und quality wise but you're the ones to tell me.

Enjoy !

For this remastered edition, I first rectified the speed which was slightly too fast and correc
ted the
balance between the channels. Then I restored the bass and high ends, cleaned some parasite noi
ses in
the middle freqs and boosted Janis vocals and the brass a little. The whole thing sounds a lot
clearer
now. VG+ at least, I'd say.

JOY DIVISION
1979-09-22
NASHVILLE BALLROOM
LONDON

Another request from another fine Zomb staff member, Watson387, as this was his orig
nal seed here.

Vinyl sourced as many Joy Division boots seems to be, with some slight surface noise
as well as a serious low end thump, limited highs and an overall low digital imprin
t. SO I corrected each as much as possible; tweaking the low, adding some highs, sli
ght de-noising of the surface and the final digital maximization.

*The last song that was from the original seed appears to be an official release fro
m "Short Circuit: Live At The Electric Circus (1977-10-02)". As this song was also m
astered very differently and really didn't fit into the set all that well anyways, i
t has been omitted.
