Peter Hammill - Radio Tapes Collection (5 Vol., 6 Disc)
Vol. 1
Notes:
Recording date(s): 1984
Lineage: FM radio --> Denon HX Pro Tape deck, Maxell MC tape Dolby C --> Pioneer CDr recorder --> WAVE --> FLAC
In 1997 I had made for friends and myself a series of CDr called the Peter Hammill Radio Tapes Collection. This consisted of transferring the best (FM) of own Hammill tapes to CDr. Mostly these recorded by myself from Dutch or British radio. Though these were for friends only, it's now sometimes being sold as bootleg.
The series consisted of 5 volumes and I had made some simple artwork at the time (using PowerPoint). I'll upload the artwork as well or post it on the yahoo Hammill list. This Volume 1 also remains a fave of mine bacause a) first Hammill show though I'd been buying VdGG/PH since 1977 and b) excellent FM sound quality (better then the well known bootleg of this gig): Utrecht, Vredenburg 1985.
From the 1997 artwork: Amsterdam, Sunday 8 April 1984, the famous Royal Theatre Carre: This was my very first Peter Hammill Live Experience and I bit the bullet for the second time. KRO radio broadcasted nearly the entire show. This is a first generation copy with unsurpassed sound quality (helas not for Flight: there are only audience recordings). There also exists a very good bootleg CD -A Stranger Still- which however lacks the last three songs included here.
Disc 1 - 57:57
Disc 2 - 71:37
Vol. 2
Notes:
This Volume 2 also remains a fave of mine bacause a) my second PH gig and first PH solo gig b) excellent FM sound quality (better then the well known bootleg of this gig): Utrecht, Vredenburg 1985.
From the artwork: This was the second PH gig I attended (with Bo, Peter and Mark). It was a solo performance on 19 March 1985 at the Vredenburg, Utrecht. A little less than 1 hour of this concert was broadcasted by VARA radio, Moondogs. Years later VPRO radio broadcasted the encore (Het Slotaccoord) Still life. There's also a bootleg LP of this concert called Time for a change, which lacks the Still life encore.
Disc 3 - 64:41
Vol. 3
Notes:
This Volume 3 remains a fave of mine: the Moondogs radio show. From the artwork:
VARA Radio's Moondogs was a legendary 3 hours weekly show devoted to just one topic/artist. In 1982 PH was their guest. The essentials of this special have been collected on this CD. Mostly these consists of live recordings and a studio session The 1982 Piano Tour. It contains the best Flight I<92>ve heard and a rare performance of Mediavil. But first PH demonstrates on piano how Killer was created.
Disc 4 - 74:01
Vol. 4
Notes:
From the 1997 artwork:
"Hammill has been a frequent guest of Dutch radio, esp. VPRO, but also VARA and KRO. Lots of talking of course, but also quite a number of studio sessions. These latter have been collected on this CD. Mostly they stem from my own -so first generation- recordings, except Autumn, which stems from a session that was preceded by PH being interviewed by Edward Ka-Spel (!) -more to come... And: I was in the studio of the KRO 1995 session! "
(and PH happened to go and sit next to me at the bar during the rest of the radio show; so I "had" to chat with him. Fam ous cryptic Leo was also one of the 25 or so people in the studio)
Disc 5 - 66:47
Vol. 5
Notes:
Volume 5 consists of the very good left-overs (kinda); mostly non-Dutch, but always first or second generation FM radio stuff. More good stuff in my vaults, but vols 1-5 remain 80% of the best stuff in terms of sound quality.
From the 1997 artwork:
"This is the second sessions CD in this series. Criteria: high sound quality and no official/unofficial CD-release (yet). The session with David Jackson had been in my vaults for 10 years and was real re-discovery.
Regarding the 1973 Peel session -not to be found on the official Peel Sessions CD:
info taken from Pawn Hearts In Still Life. Considering from the current album this appears quite credible, even though this is absent on page 10 of Fred's Trainspotters' guide."
Disc 6 - 71:03

A minor glitch was removed between tracks 9 and 10 and a couple of additional very minor glitches were removed. I transferred the wav to CDWAV and re-tracked it, compressed to flac, and double checked that w ere no sbe's.
Emmylou Harris - Knoxville, TN, May 18, 1979, SBD (2 discs)
Notes:
Emmylou Harris - Knoxville May 18 1979 This is a soundboard recording from Emmylou's 1979 tour following her Blue Kentucky Girl a lbum which I haven't seen circulating before. It features guest appearances by Sharon and Cheryl White. The source (which I received in a trade, therefore I don't have any lineage info) had a short silence in "Sorrow in the wind", which meant about 2 seconds were missin g. To make it more listenable I've edited out one of the repeated "Sweet sorrow in the win d" lines at the end, the one that was incomplete because of the silence. Apart from that e verything is there. I've also done some EQing and slight noise reduction to make the recor ding less dull. The results are pretty good, check out the mp3-sample below. Artwork is in cluded in the torrent. Enjoy! I'M SO TIRED Gov't Mule, The Joint, Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas, NV 10/28/05 (AKG 483) A chronological compilation of cover songs by Warren Haynes (1993-2005). By no means complete as I only have so many shows. The criteria for selection was it had to be an electric band and Warren had to sing lead vocals. I Excluded most GD songs, and performances with the Allmans and Phil and Friends. Exceptions are St. Stephen Jam (Included for completeness), Just a Little Light (Because It kicks ass. Kimock 2nd guitar) and Into the Mystic, both Phil & Friends. (Can anyone provide me with the encore to Mule at The Arlington,10/23/05?) I EQ'd a few of the older tracks, and normalized all to match. All segues are as complete as possible. Great thanks to all the Mule tapers who have made these exceptional recordings and to Warren, for letting them do it.

Hem's set at the Troubadour was the best I had seen since the first time I s aw them live three years ago. Note that Hem is taper friendly yet I don't see many shows surface, so I would strong ly encourage tapers to embrace this immensely talented band. Also the first show I have ever recorded on minidisc, using the brand new Sony MZ-RH1 unit which records onto 1gb media. It's like a hard disc recorder with removable dis cs though it is limited to 44.1. I have to say this might be the easiest recorder eve r built and it was built with tapers in mind. Great features, meters and size. A bree ze to use and so cheap. Sample below. Butterking for JEMS

A nice double CD collection, Diamonds is Jimi in the studio, jamming rough ideas into finished songs. Featuring jams with many notable musicians, including Steven Stills, John McLaughlin, Buddy Miles, Nicky Hopkins, along with regular band members Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, and Billy Cox. These songs are very early in development, and differ greatly from their final versi ons. But it's interesting to see how songs start from maybe just a small riff in the midd le of a jam, into a more developed idea and melody, and then a final version. `Pride Of Man' for example is a very early version of `Power Of Soul' "Drivin' South ", while not as powerful as the version on Radio One/BBC Sessions is still good, especially the John McLaughlin version. Not sure how to approach this but here goes. These tapes are from Ross. He was known for low gen newly circulated genuine Jimi st udio jams and concerts. His Maui tape sounds like no other and the most aesthetic to my ears of all sources. The songs on most of his stuff is at the right speed. Not sure what gen his stuff is, but it sure sounds clean n neat n complete. These pre-date DAT tape too. Now this oughta prove interesting.. My friend knew Ross better. He actually bought t apes from him, I didn't(except for Maui). He saw him several times. I had bad luck a nd didn't go to the conventions at the same time that he did. Since he only went in summer and every other month I guess. Anyway one day my friend tells me that Ross is switching to cdr from cassettes. At the same time bootleggers at conventions were g etting squeezed by all the folks that could burn discs. The "real" silver bootleg cd eeze were drying up rapidly too. Anyway Ross made a final offer one summer by provid ing an 11 tape series of all his studio stuff. My friend only had enough money to bu y 4 of them. He took #2, 3, 6, & 7. Credits and apologies to the original (but sadly now forgotten) posters and thanks to the Helsinki one for suggesting it would make a good companion for the Sweden one. The music is unchanged so anybody with the original downloads and the ability or desire to do their own editing need read no further... Editing was substantially less than the France set, mainly getting consistent level and balance on all tracks and some minor tidying. I left the abrupt Sundvall tracks transition alone as making it believable meant cutting more music than I cared to do. Performances are mainly improv, although not as severe as the still available Trondheim set, and I understand all the band also used tape loops and/or other electronics so the instrumentation is a bit of a guess as it isnt' always possible to detect who is palying what. There is some voice which I guess must be Lindsay as I don't think Georgie Born had joined at this time. The quality is very good, especially considering they are quite old audience recordings, so this is now a very good full CD and I thought others might like the benefit of my editing... ... Enjoy!! Henry Cow - Teatro Lirico, Milan, Italy, Feb. 25, 1977, SBD
Notes:
Henry Cow (Edit / Remix / Remaster) ----------------------------------- Teatro Lirico, Milano, Italy February 25th 1977 ------------------ Source: Dime download (id=99686) SBD > Master cassette > behringer equalizer > audio cdrw750 > cd > Plextools Editing: Fixed both glitches identified in original post Cross-channel remix (all tracks) Balance correction (all tracks) Selective equalization Some applause removal Transfer: Flac > Nero 7 > Flac Frontend (level 6) Quality: Worth a solid A now ---------------------------- This is an edited / remastered post, with the encouragement of original poster '38f', of the Henry Cow Concert from Teatro Lirico, Milano Feb 25th 1977 The original version was a difficult listen with most of the sound on the LH channel, which could not be fixed using the balance control, indicative often of processing to 'improve' the stereo image, so I edited, remixed and remastered initially for my own interest. This was by far the most time consuming of my HC edits (10-12 hrs) as the sound appears to come from at least 4 different sources (3 different ones on d1t1 alone) whilst the mix is also different between discs 1 and 2. This required selective editing of different parts of individual tracks and (unusually for me) equalising of low / high extremes of the first 4.20 and last 1.00 of d1t1 and the first 0.35 of d2t1 as these came from the poorest quality sources. What you now have here is a very good and (thanks to the original SBD source) listenable Henry Cow performance, one of my favourites now that is slightly more rock than all out improv, and I hope others will appreciate the benefit of my editing work... ... Enjoy!! Band: ---- Fred Frith Guitar, Viola, Piano, Vibes Tim Hodgkinson Organ, Alto, Clarinet Lindsay Cooper Bassoon, oboe, soprano, flute (?), voice (?) Georgie Born Bass, cello, voice (?) Remastered and compiled all Henry Cow and related BBC sessions
seeded at Dime a Dozen on double disc. For easy listening, made
volume normalize on all tracks and EQ, hiss reduction (only a bit)
or speed correct on some tracks. The sound quality is vary, and
Audiophile Remastered Limited edition bootleg tracks are just
excellent, and the rest are VG to VG+. Need to upgrade.

Every once in a while, you come across a recording that is so far beyond mere notes, that comes to you with such tremendous power and soul, from all the places of love in the Universe that you convulse with joy and wish you could somehow experience it with everyone on the planet. Here is just such a show by Joe Higgs, the Father of Reggae, guitarist, and mentor of Bob Marley. It is absolutely filled with the very essence of rasta. Whenever you're high or low, remember Jah love you, and enjoy this concert. This is a FIRST GEN copy of this show. Many moons ago, I knew the original taper of this and many other 1980's New Orleans live tapes and was fortunate enough to get a first gen cassette of this fabulous show. It's been close to twenty years since I talked to him and I have had absolutely no luck finding him via the internets. His name was Kevin and was a moderately successful artist in the New Orleans scene. He even did a couple of official New Orleans Jazzfest posters, which is quite a prestigeous accomplishment. By what I was told, Sheila's opened up in conjunction with the 1984 New Orleans World's Fair and closed shortly after the fair ended. This was not a well attended show, but the Hoodoo's still put on a fantastic show. 1st gen cassette-hard drive-flac

(Give Me Back My) Wings 8. More To Love Than Meets The Eyes 9. Bastard (1979) Bonus Track: 10. Is Your Love In Vain (Don Kirshner's Rock Concert TV, around 1981) (I have had to remaster the living hell out of this song. There were more dropouts and volume fluctuations than I can count in this 5 minute song. One tiny dropout remains. I did some hiss reduction , but couldn't do too much, because everything except his vocal is horribly compressed and muddy. Nonethless, I am including it as I t hink it is a stunning performance of a Dylan song rarely covered. Ronnos' solo is soulful.)

(the shn files had extra RIFF chunks, so I used shntool to strip them and set the ou

original seeder's notes:
quality: A/A-
comments:
This version has minimal processing so there is some tape hiss.
A small price to pay for a better sounding product.
These discs are the complete tapes for the "Zen Arcade" outtakes known to exist
to collectors. They have been edited only to eliminate excessive silence between tra
cks.
